Chosun Ilbo has reported that North Korea is cracking down hard on NK refugees trying to cross into China, according to a recent defector. North Korean government has decreed that anyone crossing the border is considered a traitor to the people, and that not one defector should be allowed. They've decreed that times of North Korea holding a blind eye to NK defectors is now over. They've set up a prison and a concentration camp in the Hamkyong province, specifically designed to handle attempted defectors. So many bodies are piling up in there that NK police don't know what to do with them other then to burn them.
North Korea, up to now, used to separate defectors into three level categories. Level 1 (considered the gravest criminals) were the ones who contacted Christian aid workers, went into foreign embassies for asylum, and contacted foreign governments. They were imprisoned for minimum of 10 years hard labor at Yodok prison. The second level were the one who never contacted any aid workers, but decided to stay long term in China. The third level were the ones who went looking for food in China. The latter two levels were imprisoned from 6 months to 2 years hard labor.
Now all that has changed, according to NK defectors. Now, anyone crossing the border and getting caught are meted out the same punishment by being detained in the new concentration camp where it's being described as "hell on earth" which is even worse than the Yodok prison. Not only the attempted defectors are being arrested, but people who also get caught near the Chinese border without any explainable reason are being arrested. Also those who get caught with cell phones near the Chinese border are being treated same as the defectors. In the past, they were able to get off by paying a fine or serving a short sentence. Not anymore, as all of them are being treated as the "traitor to the people".
As NK's regime survivability situation worsens, the tyranny gets even worse, as North Korea is turning into the Killing Fields that rival Pol Pot's Killing Fields in Cambodia 30 years ago..

The "worse than Yodok" camps are indeed places of unimaginable horror. One is described in "Long Road Home", a new memoir of camp life by a man who escaped one. (I was given a review copy.) It's a quick read and I recommend it to everyone. |

Why does NK put such great effort into trying to contain the "secret" of their country's abject failure? The cat was out out the bag decades ago.
Do they think the rest of the world is stupid, that they can be easily duped into not knowing what happens in their country? |

I think they are more concerned about keeping their own population in fear and could care less what the rest of the world thinks. |
