There has been a surge of Korean co-teachers complaining about their foreign co-workers sweating too much. These have been written on websites that are openly zenophobic and racist. A lot of this has been attributed to the fact that these foreigners are obese.
Should we magically turn off our sweat glands in order to please our Korean co-teachers.
I'm just waiting for Arirang TV to do a special on this cultural difference dilema. |

Would rather someone sweat than stank of Kimchie so bad you can smell it anywhere in the office. |

Haha
I sweat so much when I'm teaching. I think it's natural when you are exerting a lot of mental and physical energy as well as probably being a little uncomfortable in front of the class.
I can usually feel the wet spot on the back of my shirt growing as the lesson goes on.
Students often ask me if I'm too hot. |

I used to sweat a lot and they kept asking me if I was embarrassed. I was after they asked me, but not before. I found that never wearing white t-shirts and making sure the fans above the teaching area are on at the start of the class really help. |

They can't calim its racial. I'm an adoptee and I sweat buckets here.
People look at me like I've just finished wandering through the Sahara.
A little overweight, not fat, but that's by American standards. So they proably blame it on my 'obesity'.
On the plus side this sweat barrage fully justifies my rampant use of the AC. |

In the gym I sweat way more than everyone else (the gym is pretty hot). The reason, however, is very simple: I actually work out hard, really hard. The men and women working out around me look like they are playing with plastic toys, no exertion, no real effort. Of course I'm going to sweat...wish the gym wasn't so damn hot, though. |

You know what - I don't care! I will give it to them "Ya foreigners really do sweat a lot" Your making a a big deal out of something really small. Hell we have that same racism here in on Eslcafe.com. Every week somebody (me sometimes) is making some generalization or didyaeverynotice.
Until something bigger comes of this - I don't care! |

They're gonna cancel each other out!
I sweat like a madman. Thankfully, the weather is getting cooler and a lot less humid. |

Isn't it true that people of North European heritage not only sweat more but have more fat layers? I mean its just a simple anatomical variation.
Their ancestors in the cooler northern climes had to survive harsh winters as well as were unused to hot weather.
Apart from slimming down to a healthy weight, its not as if there's much they can do about it....! |

I think that 75% of the people at my gym are there because they think they have to simply show up every day to get their money's worth. Most of them are just messing around and wasting their time. Guess it's better than playing Starcraft and having a smoke tho. |

Close, but a bit off. Europeans and North Americans do tend to sweat more. The reason, I would hypothesize is not because it's cooler, but because summers tend to be drier. It's just as hot in the Mediterranean and North America, but it's drier. If you sweat when it's dry, your sweat evaporates and cools you because evaporation is an endothermic process meaning, energy is put into the process and being taken from your body heat. In a humid environment, there is considerably less evaporation because the surrounding air is nearly saturated. No evaporation means that sweat isn't cooling you, so there's less of a benefit when you sweat. Because there's a smaller benefit, there's less of a reason to sweat. It ends up being pretty wasteful to sweat if it doesn't cool you. |

I'm thin and I sweat.
For deity and country I wonder how the obese live here.
Take my sweat, lack of sturdy bleach and dryer then add 100 lbs, I'd complain too.
I do chuckle though. It seems everywhere if you walk home from your workout park dreanched in sweat people look at you funny. I dont blame them but, who wants to get in their car sweatty as hell when you could just add a mile to the course?
Suppose you dont look odd on the way home though. |

Dude!
At the gym I sweat so much that there's sometimes a puddle on the floor around the stationary bike (if I'm there more than 30 minutes)! After about an hour of exercise, I usually change shirts and get a fresh towel since I'm totally soaked in sweat. Nobody's said anything to me yet, but I'm conscientious about wiping off the exercise equipment after I'm finished. (I also pick up my weights and put them on a rack...totally un-Korean, but appreciated by the trainers.)
The funny thing is that I spent most of my life in Hot-lanta (Atlanta) where it's both hotter and more humid that Seoul. I'm a little heavy, but far from obese, so it's something that comes naturally for me.
I'd be curious to find out if there's a legitimate reason for my excessive sweating. I've found that cutting out coffee in the morning makes me sweat less...I wonder if it's the caffeine or the sugar that makes me sweat more. |
