|

This is a question for the lifters out there:
For the last few weeks when I've done pushups I've noticed a clicking noise in my left elbow as I go down then push back up. It doesn't hurt but sounds nasty. Anyone have any idea what this might be? Also, does anyone know the name of a good doctor in Seoul that I could see? I don't want this to turn into something more serious |

If I could stay moderately fit without any kind of physical exertion I would but unfortunately that isn't feasible |

I'm no expert but I have experience of clicking joints.
For me, the clicking was in my knees when doing squats with 60kg.
I simply had to stop and move to lighter weights and correct my form.
(I was putting lots of weight through my toes instead of my heals: I learnt that I should be able to wiggle my toes when doing a squat.) I still can't perform squats with the bar on my back to any satisfactory degree with out clicking, so I do different kinds of squats and exercises now.
Clicking is not natural and I remember reading that it may cause future problems.
I sometimes get a click when doing bench, usually when my elbows splay out too far. For me, the correct form for pressing is to keep my elbows in line with my shoulders. I had to drop some kilo's at first though, as it relies more on muscle power. When elbows splay out during a lift, it is the bodies way of lifting the load as easily as possible.
Hope this helps, I used to read a lot of Stuart McRoberts (hardgainer.com) books when he did bi-monthly mailings. Maybe form needs working on, or find alternate exercises which stimulate the same muscles. |

Thanks. I'll try some different forms and see if any are better. Also complicating matters is the fact that I have tendonitis in my right shoulder and my right wrist was either fractured or had ligament damage (never got an MRI so we never figured out exactly what was wrong) |

I've had this for most of my life, as far back as I can remember. I'm average height/weight since I ran track/cross country a lot and never did much lifting, but this always discouraged me. It really only happens when I'm benching or doing pushups.
I've read that its something that is fairly common, though is often indicative of a weakness in the surrounding muscles. However, it often can be various injuries from fluid in the elbow or a tendon issue. |

It could be loose cartilage, which is from what I understand, quite normal wear. However, if cartilage becomes completely loose/detached and 'floats' around in and around a joint, it can jam near the ends of bones and cause excruciating pain.
My friend's ex-girlfriend did figure-skating all of her life and quite often would get very loud clicks in her knees. She had worn all of the cartilage away in her knees to the point where she was pretty well rubbing bone on bone (not good!).
I also had a kinesiology teacher in high school who used to be a world-class beach volleyball player. He actually had cartilage detach and jam into his knee joint. He immediately fell to the ground in pain and I believe he had to get surgery (loose cartilage is removed with a vacuum). |

I used to get clicking in my elbows when I was a teenager, probably from trying to copy the Arsenio Hall intro so much |

asams, since when do you need to do push ups?
I hear a click in my shoulder sometimes when I just walk around... what is tennis elbow anyway? Does it have anything to do with tennis? |

Whenever I do sit-ups and bicycle crunches one of my ribs on the right side seems to pop in and out of place. It is extremely uncomfortable and annoys me greatly. |

Spare rib?
Perhaps your body is telling you to do other exercises. You could try doing leg-raises for abs and get some push-up bars.
Push-up bars stopped my shoulder clicking when doing push-ups. Hands on the floor make it so much easier for elbows to splay out at the sides and ruin form. Try push-ups with your bodyweight (backside) in different positions, ie. higher. |

I get the clicking noise too (in my left elbow) when doing pushups. Been happening for years and have yet to feel any discomfort. I've noticed if I take a long break (weeks) between doing pushups I get the clicking. Once I've worked back into a steady routine of doing them, the clicking usually stops. |

I've gotten the same thing when doing pushups. I stopped for a while and made sure to warm up my elbows before working out. Its gone now |

I think clicking in the knees and elbows is very normal and very common. Nothing to worry about. |
