They're certainly not out there enforcing the law. What do they do all day, because they are totally useless.

If you're talking about the riot police that they deploy whenever there's a protest, rally, festival, or any other public gathering, those are not actually cops but boys doing their military service. They don't have a choice, and they aren't getting paid.

They stopped my girlfriend the other day for not wearing a seatbelt. They let her go with a warning.

I drive past one of the biggest police academies in the country four times a week. They don't seem to be doing anything there either.

This is one of the safest countries i've ever been in. So what if the police can't be bothered with teenage boys riding their scooter on the sidewalk..

They don't have to do anything because Korea is very peaceful.

Sure Korea's safe, until you get within 10m of a road. God forbid you're actually on one in a vehicle.

I'd like to see someone get fined for running a red, regardless of whether they are older than the fining police officer and indignant or not.

The Korean police seem to have only two jobs that I can see. Occasional traffic control (during rush hour) and breaking up drunken ajeossi fights now and then.

I'm guessing they have a serious amount of down-time. Especially the ones who have been cops 10 years or more. They can basically get the junior cops to do everything.

They seem to have an arrangement with the Korean gangsters where the gangsters can only run their prostitution, gambling and whatever else they do if it stays at a certain level and doesn't disturb people who live in 'nice' areas.

I've also heard from good sources that the 'detectives' in the Korean police force are the most corrupt people in Korea who spend more time hanging out with gangsters and hookers than with other police. They seem to be the guys trusted to keep the peace (i.e. pass on the bribes) between the gangsters and the cops.

My school is across the street from a police station and any time I look out the window I see the same group of cops standing on the steps of the station smoking and drinking Keopi.

It sure is. Unless you are a pedestrian trying to cross at a walk sign.

Where do you get the idea they're not getting paid? They do get a montly allowance, though it's quite small.

That's not "pay," it's a tiny stipend the government gives them. When you have to go in for jury duty and the state gives you $6 a day for your trouble, do you consider that "pay"?

It's money. That's where I get the idea. Plus, they get more as they advance in rank.
