I'm taking my girlfriend to Busan next weekend. I want to swim in the ocean, but I'm afraid that because September 12th is a couple weeks past the 'official' summer vacation season, I won't be allowed to, or it might be too cold.
Does anyone know how late in the year it's allowed/acceptable/comfortable to swim in the water at Haeundae beach? Will I have any problems if I try it on 9/12-9/13? Thanks for your advice. |

| 2 weeks ago the water was still cold and I think they pack up at 6:30 or so. I don't know if anyone would say anything after that. I would choose a different beach as Haeundae was so full it was crazy. |

Yeah well two weeks ago it was peak vacation season for Koreans. I'm hoping that by September 12th it won't be crowded, but the water will still be warm enough to swim or at least splash around in.
But if the water is really cold even in mid-August when all the vacationers are there, I guess I should stick to the hotel pool... |

| Head out to the East Coast, the beaches are incredible and you can stay out there all night. Well worth the bus ride out there. |

Thanks but my girlfriend's already been to Sokcho before, so I booked us a trip to Busan. We're taking the KTX and staying in a nice hotel on Haeundae beach for two nights. We're gonna lounge in the hotel, swim in the pool, sit and eat grilled seafood along the boardwalk, etc etc.
I just wanted to know if we will be able to swim in the ocean or not. |

You can always swim in the ocean provided there aren't police/life guards preventing you. Just depends on your comfort level. My girlfriend and I went swimming at Haeundae last March after a few drinks. Sure it was cold, but far better than jumping in the Great Lakes in January, which I've also done.
As for comfort, it should be reasonably comfortable to swim up into October provided the weather is decent at the time. I do know that the water was downright warm at Gyeongpodae in Gangneung last Sunday so you should be fine. |

I was there at last Fri/Sat, it was a little cold at first but not so bad once you're in. Plus the summer vacation season has 'finished' so it was not that packed at all.
Weather is cooling down a little bit now I guess the sea temperature might dip a bit more in 2 weeks time mind. |

I got pulled out the sea at Gwangali on Friday night... they have lifegaurds partolling after 6.30 and swimming is verboten - I was tempted to make them swim for me though.
But that's during 'peak season'.
Because it's September now you're allowed to swim whenever you want.
Sea temperatures stay high while air temperatures reduce. So the water will probably be relatively warm for another month. But it's not warm, you might not be able to frolic in the surf.
(I presume the regulations are the same for Haundae) |

| I went to Songjeong Beach (next one round from Haeundae) in early October last year. The water was warmish and nobody stopped us from swimming. A cab to Songjeong from Haeundae is about 5000 (I think). There are also buses. If you get hassled at Haeundae you could give it a try. |
