please advise.

i have to start teaching kindergarten people soon (as not part of my contract) and i have no idea how/what to teach them.

what do people do? ive heard people say they do a lot of colouring and songs? Are there internet sites that are useful for classroom sheets? any reccomendations.

im not the kind of person that likes to jump about making a nob of myself so please dont suggest anything like that cos i wont be able to see it through.

however, i am very grateful for any suggestions that are offered, so thanks.

I freaked out when I heard I had to teach KG. It can be difficult because they have short attention spans, but KG students are little sponges who only want to please you. No back talk and pure adulation can turn into a really fun time.

I suggest incorporating lots of songs into your lesson, even something as simple as the ABC song. Every class I work on ABC's with my class and then we move into a simple topic.

Teaching expressions can get really difficult, so focus on building vocabulary. Some of my favorite activies include a "flyswatter game" where I put pictures on the board with magnets (ie. for an animal lesson - cat, dog, bird, rabbit, etc.) and then I name one of the pictures. The students race to see who hits it first. They never bore of this.

A low key activity for vocabulary is something I call "listen and color." I give them a worksheet with 4-8 color-able pictures and then they listen and color as I say each word. Easy, fun and uses a good 10-15 minutes of your class. Smile

You'll be fine.

At the end of the class you can play musical chairs. The kids walk around the chairs shouting out all the words you say over and over until you say the magical word, then they race for a chair. I try to use a funny word like "octopus" for the magical word. Only do this at the end because it gets them crazy.

That touch the board game is good. I do it with words instead of pics so they can practice easy word recognition.

Kindergarden for breakfast biergarten for dinner.

Games games and more games. If you are male with any body hair welcome to the touch me club.
Kids are great but keep them active and involved or they will swarm you like angry puppies. I'm not trying to sound downtrodden here. They can be so much fun as others have said.

However Kinders can also teach you how to hate kids.

I do most of what WendyRose suggested, except colouring since my coteacher requests I not to as it's messy. On the other hand, I do teach my kids expressions but with actions of course. They are very good at speaking if they associate each of my expression with an action. I'm so proud of them, I swear they know so many ways to answer "How are you?" besides from "I'm fine." After teaching the expressions, I follow up with a song. BTW, check youtube, there are tons of Kindy songs there. You can also try picture Bingo, my kids love that.

Good luck!
