the guy wasn't being racist, just ignorant.
my boiler packed in the other week and the landlord's son who can speak english came down to fix it. we got talking and he said "he had been to europe and travelled a little". he said he "was amazed about the number of negro-AMERICANS in europe." i instantly said, knowing about holland's and france's etc, etc african colonial past, "that these people he was seeing were probably not american, but instead european-african or, maybe, just straight-forward, good old fashioned africans." he insisted these people were negro-AMERICAN. it was as if he just thought that all black people were negro-AMERICAN and he did not know the black person's original origins.
it near enough turned into a full scale argument which i unfortunately had to back down from or risk not having any hot water or heat!!! |

Amen, I'd be right ticked....all these dammn hyphens!
Actually, you know what's funny? It's like when my (Korean) wife pretends to be Chinese or Japanese...ok, gotta be there....but when my African friends pretend to be THE Af-Am brotha'.
Shoosh,

It amuses me to see Black Americans label themselves as "Africans" 200 years later..
They're virtually a different species, and pretty clueless as to the reality of life on the dark continent.Real Africans are more preoccupied with finnding their next bowl of sadza than wearing outsize gold chains and listening to gangsta rap 24/7. Same goes for "Eye-talian" Americans or "Irish".. its hilarious to see some jackass from New york going on about the IRA or whatever when his sole experience of the emerald isle is drinking a guiness one time.
Americans should really have melted into an American identity by now..same as Australians, Kiwis and S.africans have. I've never met an Australian come up to me and introduce himself "how ya gawing mate, I'm irish". |

I agree. I prefer to just say "I am a chicken". Not, "I am a part alien Italian American chicken with some German thrown in. |

I'm heading to teach in Bundang shortly, but, after doing a year in the northern suburbs of Tokyo, I gotta tell ya: There are hundreds of Africans there, with melodious Britishy-African accents, who all pretend to be African-Americans: I even had a good friend, who worked in a hip-hop shop in my building (The town of 60,000 had more hip-hop shops than sushi shops), from Senegal, whose real name was Mansore, but he preferred to be called "Fi-dy centsuh." He even mimicked the Af-am accent, "Yeah, mon, I be from da hood, mon, now buy tee-shirtsuh," and when we'd go out drinking, we'd get really drunk and he'd pick up Japanese women, having better luck than cracker, your truly. Every single one of these girls believed he was American! |

In England the Blacks of west Indian origin hate the blacks of African origin, quite a lot of racism there. Black Americans think black British are wussies, and so on.. Black Africans envy black Americans for their standard of living...and I've noticed Africans arriving in London quickly start to imitate the american hip hop culture. |

This post makes me think of an interesting situation when I was getting my MA at Indiana University.
As a French major (for my BA) I had spent my junior year abroad in France. I was at Universite Paul Valery in Montpellier.
There were many Moroccan (SP?) students there. One was in the same Art class as me.
We became very good friends. Soon, I got to know tons of Morracins (SP?).
After a few weeks "our group" consited of 5 Moroccins and 3 white americans.
We were great friends for about 8 months. Then the program for the Americans was over and I came home.
We always spoke French, and long before I had ever met a Moroccin, I was told by French teachers (who knew) that my intonation and stress patern in French were the same as Quebecois, which is also very similar to those of Africans who come from a French speaking country.
Well, I had only been at Indiana U. a few days, when I saw these 5 very black, very African looking guys in the cafeteria having Breakfast. I sat at a table close to them. I was all alone. I went to get coffe, and on purpose passed very close to them. They were speaking French and sounded like my friends from Morocco. So, I Just up and asked them in French if they were from Morocco.
They were. They were so shocked that a white American could speak French so well , and like a Moroccan. They asked me to join them.
After that, for 2 years, those 5 guys and me and several other white Americans were real close friends.
One day, I asked one of them why they only had each other and white Americans for friends, but not African Americans. He said. "We don't like them" I never asked again.

at least we don't have to see car bumper stickers that say "Kiss Me I'm African!"
"Kiss Me, I'm Italian!". What is that! What does that mean!
A few days ago in Seoul I was behind a car driven by a Korean woman that had stick-on letters which read, "Do NOT Kiss Me". It took me a while to get it, and then I realized the joke was "don't bump my car". I wondered if she knew about all the "Kiss Me I'm Irish/Italian/German.." bumper stickers back in the States, and would she bump into cars that had stickers that read "Kiss Me 'I'm Irish"? |

I am not too surprised.
I know some black Canadians who can't stand black Jamaicans (and vice versa).
But then I know some Koreans who can't stand the Japanese and some Chinese who can't stand Koreans.
I also know some English guys who hate the French and so on.
Colour of skin, apparently, is no indication of kinship. |

Come to the cities in South Africa . You'll see middle classed educated black kids with serious identity issues . Sad as the zulu and Xhosa people have some proud history and culture and generally come from conservative family backgrounds with a high emphasis on education . Then you see them imitating Hip/hop "gansta" culture , which to me is pretty sad . |

Maybe we can go into the past 3 years to tell them. |

Excerpt LA Times article "Congo cult has a passion for fashion":
In a country where many survive on 30 cents a day, Papy Mosengo is flashing $1,000 worth of designer clothing on his back, from the Dolce & Gabbana cap and Versace stretch shirt to his spotless white Gucci loafers.
"It makes me feel so good to dress this way," the 30-year-old said when asked about such conspicuous consumption in a city beset by unemployment, crime and homelessness. "It makes me feel special."
But Mosengo can scarcely afford this passion for fashion. He worked eight months at his part-time job at a money-exchange shop to earn enough for the single outfit, one of 30 he owns, so he'll never have to wear the same one twice in a month.
He doesn't own a car. He lets an ex-girlfriend support their
5-year-old son and still lives with his parents, sleeping in a dingy, blue-walled bedroom that is more aptly described as a closet with a mattress.
Friends, family and his new girlfriend implore Mosengo to stop pouring all his money into clothes and liquidate the closet.
"Man, we could buy a house with the money," said Dirango Mubiala, his clothing dealer, estimating that Mosengo spends $400 a month. |
