| I agree that if any city is worth 100+ bucks for a visit, it's Beijing. |

The U.S. charges Chinese 140 dollars JUST TO APPLY for a U.S. entry visa. Paying the fee is no guarantee that a Chinese will get the visa.
|
Right, I'd forgotten that. It does seem to be kind of a slap in the face to a denied applicant. |

How did you get it? I hear getting a one-year multi-entry visa to China is tough if you are NOT an ethnic Chinese. |

Maybe so, but when Hong Kong is visa-free, I'll go there instead.

| China is probably hands down the most fascinating place to visit/explore in Asia, friendly people for the most part, too. |

I'm going to Beijing on Saturday(5th) if I get my visa on time and I shudder at the thought of being there for 24 hours! I was living in Beijing and Shenzhen for about 3 months and that country has got to have the nastiest, most loathsome people with no regard for human life or dignity. Onward to Mongolia and real people |

Hong Kong IS visa free. I've been there numerous times since I've been to Korea. YOU NEED NO VISA. |

eh, he is aware of that. Hence why he plans to continue going to HKG (and not Beijing, where he'd have to pay for a visa). |

I misread that as a conditional 'when' not as a current status of 'when'. Either way, 'because' or 'while' would have been a better selection than 'when' |

The Cantonese are notorious for being rude, even amongst their Mandarin-speaking countrymen.
Next time try living in Suzhou, Nanjing or Chengdu - all are great cities with good, friendly locals living in them. Not sure about living in Beijing, but I feel the same way about Shanghai - now that's a horrid city. |

Where have you been/liked in mainland China? I've been to Beijing/Shanghai and liked both a lot (preferred Beijing), but that's all. |

You could also go to Macau (visa-free) on the same trip via a 1 hour ferry ride from Hong Kong. Macau has some rather pretty Portuguese architecture and of course the casinos, which are fun to see even if you're a non-gambler.
Both are worth visiting. That said, I have to say Beijing blows them away in terms of sites to see. |
