Me too. Not dared start it yet because I know once I do....I'll be dead to the world.....
Re OP, I play a lot of GTA IV and it annoys me in so many ways. Mostly just little things like not as many side missions or not being able to hook up trailers....but for me those were the things that made GTA: San Andreas such a great game. I think if they had combined San Andreas's gameplay with GTA IV's graphics it would have been the best game EVER. |

I highly recommend Batman Arkham Asylum. Been coming into work sleep deprived the last few days because of it. |

It really is a kicking game...very old school and a lot of fun. Always liked games that send you in on your own, due to reasons #3 and 4....stupid AI can flatten an experience. Call of duty was good for that...your comrades didn't get in your way, but typically...

No. Let the idiot de-pixelate. |

I've really enjoyed DEADSPACE on the 360.
Given, it gets a little old in the variety of missions (it's usually Run Here, Activate This, Go Back, Activate New Thingy, Go Back OMG EXPLOSION, Find New Way Back, repeat) but the atmosphere is great and it has some really freaky moments. Kind of like a love child of EVENT HORIZON (the good parts), THE THING, and SILENT HILL. I still haven't finished it but it's been great fun throughout.
BIOSHOCK is just such a thrill to replay. My girlfriend is slowly playing it and seeing her reaction to the abilities one gains, as well as the levels ("OMG DID THAT GUY EXPLODE INTO RED BLOOD THEN TELEPORT BEHIND ME?!?!?!WTF?!") makes me remember what a great game it was the first time through it.
I wish NINJA GAIDEN 2 had a story that actually matched the awesome fun of the gameplay. Too bad it's just so cheesy and absurd to take even remotely seriously.
CONDEMNED 2 was great fun as well and pretty disturbing but inconsistent. Kind of like Max Payne meets Silent Hill. Some parts were awesome, others just seemed imported from another game. |
I played Condemned 1 first and LOVED it and just happened to finish it as Condemned 2 was launching. Agreed #2 wasn't as good as #1. If you HAVEN'T played number 1 I highly recommend it, superb story telling. I felt immersed in the story, like I was hunting down the serial killer from the movie "Seven". |

Lemme see here. Red faction was pretty sweet. So was Giants Citizen Kabuto. The old Red Baron game was great.
Best computer game of all time, though was the Escape Velocity series. I'd like to try GTA 4 some time, but I gave up after spending an hour installing and registering for all of the stupid services you need just to play the game single player. |

This is definitely more important than most game designers realize. Part of the reason that games like Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem are so incredible is that they combine interesting gameplay with entertaining stories.
Admittedly, it's easy to understand why most games have terrible stories; most books and movies have terrible stories too. My biggest problem with Capitalism has always been that I get the product everyone else is willing to settle for.
Regarding the original post, I like timed missions. The mere presence of a timer often forces you to approach a given challenge in a different way. I don't see any reason such things should be limited or absent from games; if anything, I'd like to see both more and more difficult timed challenges. |

The thread takes a somewhat positive twist....from suckage to pwnage.
I should say then, the Wolfenstein, as a recent example of what I would term a 'good' game, doesn't suck thanks to the absence of my initial points.
The AI is a bit thick, but hey....chum...gun fodder = fun. No timed missions, you have no friends that want to follow your bullet-magnet butt around, and B.J. seems to be rendered with enough consistency. He sure doesn't look like the shifty-eyed dude from Wolf3D, but at least in-game he appears to look the same.
Velvet Assassin. Freaking hard. Narrow gameplay. Morphine to shift time? Hmmm....maybe if you gave it to the enemies, but if I take morphine the bad guys don't see me?
Crysis. Scripting cuts replay value to nothing.
Fallout 3. Wow. The jury is still out, but so far...pretty darn absorbing. Shotgun to the face in slo-mo has an enduring charm.

An addition to the list: Your character is a buff, tough as nails soldier/space marine/barbarian killing machine and he can't sprint for more than 5 seconds.
If you guys dig games with quality stories, the kings of the Western RPG (Bioware) have a new game coming out in November, Dragon Age: Origins. Six different characters with unique starting stories, multiple, branching storylines depending on your actions. If it lives up to what they're claiming, it's going to be special. A spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. |

Must be all the gear. But then again, that stuff must be made of balsa wood for all the protection it offers.

Hope they implement a new fighting/hit system. That alone put me off their last couple of titles. VATS in Fallout 3 is interesting. |

I'm hanging out for diablo 3.
I can't think of any games that I have replayed as many times as diablo 2 |

One thing I really hate is when a game has a mandatory tutorial you just can't skip. Some of these are just absurd in their length and really dissuade you from running through the game a second time.
I have to agree with dc'79 and sing the praises of Batman: Arkham Asylum. This is literally the first game I bought for my PS3 since Metal Gear Solid 4, and the developers hit this one out the park. I believe a PC version will also be released sometime this month. Demos can be downloaded on all the platforms, I really think it's worth a look. |

| When I'm pwning in DOTA too hard on a 16-0 streak and then the opposing team just quits right out, and I have no one left to trash talk. My e-peen is huge and I must stroke said e-peen regularly. |

Non-skippable tutorials and non-skippable cut scenes (especially long ones) are a pain, yes. Mind you, I always watch the cut scene the first time, but if my game crashes after watching it (for instance) I usually would rather not watch it again. |
