|
I like my wine yet there are so many vineyards here that I am unfamiliar with so I typically just choose a random one and hope for the best. However I also don't like to spend a lot of money so I like to choose a bottle around the manwon price range.
I thought if we have a wine review thread, it will take a lot of the hit and miss out of buying.
So here goes
Gracia de chile
Chile
Merlot
2008
around 9000 won from homeplus
Very dry, not much flavour. I didn't really notice any other flavours in this
probably won't buy again. |

Pleasantly surprised. Very buttery and very drinkable. slight fruit taste, cherry? Would be good drinking a bottle or two with friends.

Calloway crossing
Australia
Cabernet Shiraz

6900 won homeplus (on sale)
Disappointed. Watery and flavourless. I couldn't really taste anything. Would be great for people that don't like wine.
Will not buy again |

I appreciate this thread. I have only recently become a wine drinker, and it is usually hit or miss for me. I will look for your recommendations. |

There's a good wine bar in Itaewon called Kabinett Wine Bar. It's also a restaurant (dinner only). They often have great events like comedy nights and on Sept 12 they're having a dinner yacht cruise party on the Han River. Here's a link-

I like the 'under manwon' theme blackjack has going. You just won't catch me spending more than that on grocery store wine.
The only thing I can recommend is this: http://www.argentowine.com/
It's cheap (less than manwon the last time I was at Costco in Seoul), tasty, and not double or quadruple the price that I pay back in Canada. |

Jinro House Wine
1,500won a bottle ($$$)
This is a fruity little number from the world-famous in Korea brewery "Jinro". This wine was developed with the sweet toothed Korean connoiseur in mind and is made through a highly scientific complex industrial process, unlike low quality western wines.
Jinro's patented wine making method allows year round production. The first stage is the harvesting of fresh soju from the soju distillery. This is then mixed with freshly harvested from the factory "ECONOMY" brand grape juice in a ratio of 20%-80%. The bottle is then shook, labelled as wine, and left to ferment for 3-6 hours before being sent to supermarkets and Italian restaurants all over the world in Korea. Although it can be drunk by the desperate at any time it goes particularly well with nothing. The strong sweet grapey flavor will overpower chicken, beef, pasta, lamb, pork or raw habanero peppers and so is best drunk never.
The only suitable accompaniment for this detestable overpriced wine is bitter bitter tears, or processed cheese slices.

Sanmuru Special Korean Wine.
A real wine that didn't taste like juice. Other than that nothing special, but the fact that it was local, the vinyard is like half an hour from my town, and I didnt instantly spit it out out made me appreciate it. There was a reason in got a bronze seal in some wine competition- Not great, but definately one of the best offerings from Korea. |

Interesting, looks like there are some decent wines over there that are fairly cheap. I'll have to keep my eye out for them when I go over. |

I'd second that. The G7 Merlot is also good for the price. Wine is seriously overpriced here. After living in Spain, I agree totally about refusing to pay over 10,000 for a supermarket wine. I go with the offer bins in HPlus or EMart. I find most of the new world wines (Chillie, SAfrica, Argentina) they put on offer to be very drinkable. Probably something to do with the (ill conceived) snobery over French wines here.
I had a SAfrican wine a few weeks back Two Oceans, very modern looking label. Really easy drinking, fruity but not sweet. The price at 6ooo was sweet though! |
