Every generation has its tiny canon of songs that people repeat over and over and over again. One thing that made me decide never to be a karaoke DJ was knowing one and seeing him trying to disguise his agony when someone requested "Heart of glass" every single freaking week... or guys trying to be sensitive and vulnerable by singing "Unchained melody," which starts out low and jumps about sixteen octaves through the song, to the point where squirrels are the only animals who can finish it.

Now it's "Zombie" and "Creep," I'll agree. I'm already as sick of them as I am of "American pie," "Jack and Diane," "Brown eyed girl," "Stairway to heaven," "Weee don't need not eeeducation (Another brick in the wall)," and "Casey Jones." They aren't karaoke classics per se, but after hearing them overplayed to hell and back I can't stand them any longer, especially because these are all acts with other good songs that are overlooked.

Same is true for dance DJs. In my relatively small town we had a relatively large DJ called Dick Johnson play. I asked him to play "Born Slippy", taking the piss like, and he actually looked through his records to see if he had it.

Born Slippy must be analogous in this case. Am I right?

I hope you're around when I play both of those songs next time.

Just because other people butcher those songs doesn't mean the originals aren't still great (especially "Creep"; such a great song!).

And what's with the Violent Femmes hate? "Kiss Off" and "Add It Up" are pure swagger-inducing jolts of adrenaline!

Yea, Born Slippy is way over played.

I actually remember when Benicio's band had to play "Zombie" for this broad who fancied herself a singer--she looked great, kind of like a goth Lee Aaron--but quite honestly sucked hard. Most of the band had this pained expression on their faces, and more's the pity--I never got to take a picture of it all!

To me, the problem with "Creep" is the same problem with just about any Radiohead song; they blow. Beyond that, from a crowd perspective, it's a bit of a downer song, so why invite the audience to a wrist-slitting performance?

Greekfreak, you inspire a good question:

What's worse, having to listen to a cover band play these 2 songs or actually being in the band and having to play these 2 songs?

I can't say right now which is worse!

After that horrible experience of having to play "Zombie" all those years ago, I vowed never to participate in such a travesty again!

As for "Creep", I did like the song when it first came out as I was a 19 year old fool.
After hearing an amazing song like "Paranoid Android", Creep just becomes "blah, next!"

violent femmes? c'mon, you can't say that they are overplayed in korea. i can't remember ever hearing anyone play their songs.
sublime though.. jeez.. there's always some waygook covers band playing 'santeria' or 'what i got'.

as for noraebang... i think there must be some law that states that any korean girl must sing jaurim. and i hate jaurim!

Forgot about Sublime-
yes, it's really becoming cliche now.

As for Violent Femmes, I've heard enough of cover bands and open mic players doing it.
It also has to do with the fact that I never liked the Femmes.
They are so over-rated.
I suspect guys only play them or pretend to like them because girls like them.

As for two cliche girl songs that I can't stand:
Alanis Morrisette- "You Oughta Know". Christ, I've heard it a million times!
4 Non Blondes- "What's Up?". This song has always sucked! I hated it the first time I heard it. I hate it, hate it, hate it!

I was in a horrible garage band in high school, and the drummer insisted that we learn (and eventually perform) "Stairway To Heaven". At 16, you're not supposed to be disgusted by any music you discover, but that song represented all that was crappy about classic rock, add to the fact that it ways way, way overplayed on FM stations.

When we actually had a 'gig', he wanted to play it, then got upset when I asked the crowd if they wanted to hear it, and got a resounding "F___ NO!!!"

Some people just don't get it.

Sometimes people need to be saved from themselves!

Songs that should never be covered, ever- unless it's for comedic effect:

- Stairway to Heaven
- Hotel California
- Mr. Roboto (by Styx)
- Total Eclipse of the Heart (Bonnie Tyler)

Can you think of any more?

The Gypsy Kings cover was pretty good and of course was immortalized by Jesus Quintana in the Big Lebowski.
