My application asks "Do you have any tattoos on your body?" And then it asks for descriptions.

Well, yeah, i've got lots of big ones. But I plan on keeping them hidden the whole time, just like I did last time.

If I answer "no" to this, and they see my tattoos, will it become an issue? What do you think?

I could answer "yes", but that would seem to be a stupid move and would probably lower my chances of getting hired huh?

Do any of you teach with your tattoos showing? How does that work out?

Use the search function. This has been asked 2 times this year alone.

I wouldn't lie, but you could respond, none visable.

Are you interviewing with the secret service? WTH asks about tattoos on an application?

That's what I was thinking. The question surprised me. But this is Korea where it's all about image and appearance. It is to be expected.

As for the search funtion. Everyone knows it does not work on this website.....

I've been here for many years and was never asked that question on an application. If it is a desirable job then fudge the response. If it is not, move on.

It's a public school application. So I figure it must be a standard question.

Last time I didn't get asked this. but that was a hagwon.

Go to google and click on advanced search. Enter the site address and the words to query, bingo. I never use this site's search function, and google gets me the information I need every single time.

I lied about my tattoo, and it's on my wrist. Nobody notices, and if they do, they don't care. If all the tattooed teachers were thrown out tomorrow, there'd be a couple straightlacers left. My guess is they're trying to avoid this kind of thing: http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=mr+cool+ice&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&cts=1252093855885&aq=f&oq=

Well, again I say that has never come up in conversation during an application process (used to work in a hakwon and now in public school). I understand your plight, but I wouldn't worry too much about not giving more information than is necessary if everything is covered and won't be seen.

Yeah, i've got some big forearm pieces. Upper arm half sleeve, a calf almost fully sleeved, a few more.... But I just wear long sleeves and pants all the time. Problem solved.

"No" is the answer then. The tattooed scum of the west is about to invade Kandyland again, watch out Wink

Good idea. I should have thought of that.

That's the spirit. What they don't know won't hurt them. The students would find them fascinating, the staff would most likely not and you already know that.

I work for a hagwon and I just lied about my tat. I have a few friends who are in the same situation. Don't worry about whether it would become an issue. It won't be an issue if you're a good enough teacher, and as I've read folks downthread say, if they had to send back all the English teachers who had tats, they'd find that there'd be about, oh, 8 or 10 native-speaking English teachers in Korea Smile Yeah, keep it covered up and don't worry about it.

I told the truth about my tattoos when I applied. At the time, only one was visible (and not if I wore long sleeves). It's not a sleeve, but it is decent sized and down my forearm.

Three weeks ago, I got a pretty big tattoo on my bicep. It was still summer. It gets hot in the classroom. Both tattoos are visible while I teach, albeit just the edge of the new one. The students all know about them. The teachers all know about them. Nobody cares.

Well, I got the impression that it might be a somewhat negative factor since they asked about it and so I figured it's best just deny it. Yeah, I didn't figure they cared, and I know that personally, the crecruiting agency didn't care, but if that's a norm in Korea, well, I was happy to downplay anything that might be controversial even if it's only a tiny bit controversial, and, as you say, most people couldn't care less.
