|
|
After dealing with crappy Wooribank for a number of years, I went to KEB on my school's birthday and opened an account and received an international Visa ATM card. She told me that it can only be used for cash as it's difficult for their system to process purchases, meaning that it would be possible for less than scrupulous foreigners to overdraw their account. Made sense to me.
Anyway, I also got hooked up with internet banking so that I can make online remittances back to the states as well as pay my gas and apartment bills without having to deal with asking for time off from work.
No hassles, courteous service, and all was done in a timely manner - about 20 minutes.

I assume you mean "back to the states"? Any idea what kind of fee you're paying per transaction? |

Thanks. I fixed that. No, but in person it is 23,000 won up to 10,000,000 won transfer. Online is something like 10,000 won. |

I agree about KEB. I got an international ATM card a few months back. First time I was out of the country was a couple of weeks ago. I had my doubts whether it would work or not, but it worked like a charm!! No muss, no fuss! A real breath of fresh air for anything from Korea! |

Hell yeah. But it made me wonder about all the times before when I was asking for a international Visa debit card and was told foreigners can't get those. I wonder if the answer would have been different if I specified "an international ATM card".
Anyways, who cares now. I got the KEB card.
I'm still keeping my WooriBank account so that I can use a monthly budget for bills, food and transportation. Anything left over will go into my KEB savings account. |

I've just opened an a/c with KEB and I think I've wasted dozens of man-hours with Woori and most notoriously with Kookmin/KB* trying to wire money home over the years.
Passport, ARC, employment contract, and various other forms involving 3 members of bank staff usually took well over an hour and got me escorted out by the security guy on one frustration-induced blow up.
The "our banking system is different from America's" line used to wind me up, and that wasn't because my passport which he's been relentlessly thumbing through and making endless photocopies of suggested that I wasn't American.
KEB: passport. 3 minutes. done. |

That's what I'm talking about!!! Boo-yah!
What about at Woori where they always tried to get you to give the passport so they could write how much you sent. I told them one time to F.O and that the only one who had authority to do anything to my passport was the embassy or immigration |

It don't matter none, my brother, they will all hook you up. I live in Green Acres, Hooterville and I got my stuff hooked up in 20 minutes.
Get out and get some of that KEB goodness and feel the love. |

If I'm not mistaken, KEB has the highest rates for anyone looking to transfer funds to the USA. |

The online rates are different from what the in-house exchange rates are, I believe. But yeah, 23,000 won to send around $5000. Woori bank is 25,000 for 2000-5000 USD, 30,000 won for 5000-10,000 USD
I would say that there isn't much of a difference in what the banks all charge. I'm not going to waste my time with all the footwork finding a bank with the cheapest transfer rates just so I can save 5,000 won. Sheesh! |

yep KEB and Standard Chartered are the `best foreigner friendly banks` so to speak and issue international cards that actually work.
I am with SC and get charged 1% of the amount of the amount I withdraw abroad which is pretty good.......but I heard it is 10,000 won no matter the amount for KEB, right?
I have a friend who is trying to decide between the two so just need a few things clarified. |

I didn't ask about that! Anyway, I only got the card for emergencies. I usually budget appropriately for my vacations and use cash, since I don't go to dirthole countries like Thailand or the Philipines I don't have to worry about getting pickpocketed or ripped off. |

Can't go wrong with KEB. Heck, Woori bank don't even have a branch or single ATM in Incheon airport anymore. How much suckage is that? |
