I just wanted to share the recent experiences I have had.

Last night, I decided to take care of all of our, my wife and Is, business overseas.

First, I called the cable company. My wife and I pay for my grandparents cable bill; they are old and the everyone in the family chips in. I noticed that the bill shot up to $50 a month from $30 a month. Upon speaking to a representative, I found out that the deal I had had expired. Now, I wasnt going to cut my grandparents latino selection off, so, told them my situation in a very humbling tone. The lady on the phone was, for some reason, surprised that I was doing this for my grandparents. She put me on hold to see what she could do. Five minutes later, I had the old rate.

Second, I called our bank up. My wife and I just recently transferred money home. We made an offer on a very nice home and wanted to have the funds ready. I did some quick calculations with the bank representative on the phone and I decided to open a money market account. The lady was nice enough to give us some higher rate of return than those listed on the website; I was happy.

Third, I called Delta airlines. On my flight back from Florida, the video for the whole airplane had broken. So, passengers were stuck with no video for 15 hours. It was grueling. Instead of causing a ruckus on the phone, I called and told them how much I liked flying with Delta and was hoping they could somehow make me feel better about this whole situation. I got a $100 voucher towards my next ticket purchase.

Fourth, I went to Woori Bank. I have online banking, but, didnt know that I couldnt transfer more than $10,000USD at a time. I didnt want to transfer multiple times as that would rack up the remittance costs. After being kind to the teller, she not only made a lump-sum transfer for me, but she also didnt charge me the counter-remittance fee. On top of that, she gave me the good customer discount on the current transfer rate. That lady was on top of her game; I bought her a nice iced-coffee after everything was said and done.

Fifth, my wife struck again with the credit card. I called up American Express because I noticed a late fee of $19. Politely, I told them the truth. My wife had used the card without telling me about it. So, naturally, I thought we still had a 0 balance. I paid the late fee, but, was hoping to get it removed as well as the 30-day late mark on my credit report (right now, my credit score is 802). At first, the guy was reluctant, but, after talking to him with respect, he decided to help me out.

As you can see, I had a lot of "business" to take care of late last night. During this whole time, I was polite and respectful. I smiled and tried to make these people feel good. I projected my voice in a way that wasnt threatening, confrontational, or demanding. I guess what I am trying to say is that no matter ones background, ethnicity, or race and despite possible language barriers, someone trying to be nice will be notice regardless of whatever obstacle lay in front of you. Moreover, being nice will yield you a lot more in return that being a dick.

Yeah, dude, I usually like your posts but I'm hoping at least 80% of the population realizes this. Notice I said "hope"?

Anyway, I like the part about paying your grandparents cable bill.

Are you doing all of this because you are leaving Korea?

Oh no.

My wife and I want our money to work for us rather than just sit in an account. We will rent the condo out if we get it. We already have tenants lined up should we be fortunate enough to get it.

As for my grandparents - Taking care of each other has always been our family ethos. The old people have really taken care of the family over the years, especially when we were younger. This is our way of reciprocating. We've been doing this for a couple of years now.

I agree that I hope most people realize this, but, reading a lot on these boards and being back home for just a week makes me think that a lot of people feel that yelling or throwing a 2 year old temper tantrum will get them better results. I know through experience that it doesn't, no matter what the situation. So, i decided to share my little story. That's all.
