I'm going to admit... I'm a trawler, I'm insatiable for hunting around the jewellery (jewelry?) districts and have come to one conclusion at least- don't buy diamonds here. They seem to be an OK quality but the price is out of order, seriously. You'd be better off buying a cheap weekend to Beijing and picking up something in the duty-free.
I know this may sound poxy, but they do dig significant quantities of Amethyst outta the ground here- the only thing they got... (the purple one).
Consequently you can shop around and buy the stuff like marbles. Otherwise a big ingot of silver seems a good deal right now since gold went nuts... anything to add Mr. Pink? |

This is where you are wrong.
The actual diamond might last forever, but the chances of my wife losing the ring are HUGE. The chances of someone stealing the ring are HUGE. The chances of that diamond ring lasting more than 5yrs is SMALL.
Memories do last forever. If people don't last forever, and we goto some type of "spirit" world, I'd like to think we will retain our memories... |

I know the cheapest diamonds in Asia of GOOD quality are found in Singapore. Japan is the 2nd largest importer of diamonds after the USA. However when I went there I found the prices were VERY expensive, like everything else there.
Amethysts are dirt cheap here, but I don't recall them going for much back home either.
I'll add the quality of goldsmithing in this country sucks. I don't want to sound racist, but in my experience, Jews make the BEST stuff out there. See many Jews in Korea working in that trade??? I bought 3 rings when I married. 2 white gold bands and a yellow gold for my wife. (so she could wear yellow/white depending on what she was wearing) Seriously, my white gold band turned a blackish color. The one my wife wore gave her a huge rash. The yellow gold one gave her a rash too. The stuff is JUNK.
Comparison: a good wedding band back home is 500-1000 dollars. You are paying for quality (and the 100% markup they do) and they are guarenteed a lot better than here.
Final word on this: my friend is a geologist. He tells me diamonds are an inflated market. They aren't as rare as rubies or emeralds, yet far more expensive. He bought his wife a ruby engagement ring. |

DONT BUY A DIAMOND IN KOREA.
Seriously. THinking of proposing or something? I looked EVERYWHERE for a decent ring. You can go the route of a place like Tiffany's that has quality, but you're looking at 20-50mil for the ring.
Korean jewelery is cheap, low budget CRAP. Seriously.
If you want a good diamond ring buy it back home.
(Internet shopping is another place you might pick up something you want, but if you are like me, you'll probably want to "try before you buy".) |
yeah, i know the quality thing is not going to be too hot and yes i am going to propose. just thinking maybe get a temporary ring til i an afford a better one. |

Well I would go aling with this. Diamonds are basically all but worthless, you can't resell them for anything (compared to gold), which is why that outfit debeers are always saying 'diamonds are forever' to promote them as wedding and anniversary gifts to keep. Because they aint worth sheet, there are too many of them in South West Africa, the Urals etc.
If you can afford it, bite the bullet and buy Cartier or Tiffany, because at least that way it will have a designer value, and you'll at least get some of it back.
There was a post on the buy and sell forum a while ago. Fellow bought a ring for his fiance and they broke up. He got less than 10% of what he paid initially. He was ripped off not by the jeweller, but by the myth that diamonds are really valuable. |

According to my friend who is a geologist Rubies are the gem to have. He says they are rare, and since they aren't popular, they sell cheap and retain their value. |

But diamonds are beautiful. I think thats the issue. And very classic looking. Also, since they are colourless they go with everything you would wear - clothing, and jewlery. With the coloured gems, they pose issues when co-ordinating. Which I know sounds petty, but is a consideration considering you are going to be wearing that ring every day, for the rest of your married life. |

Having a 1-2 carat ruby, surrounded by small diamons in a white gold setting will ensure you can practically wear it with anything. |

Every time you look at that nice, shiny diamond, you can wonder how many African children lost their hands, arms, or legs, to get it to you.
To those poor people, diamonds truly do seem like forever. |

Actually i'm "just" about there with mine too. we've talked a few times and have both agreed that a band is more appropriate. Maybe if we were rolling in bucks we'd get more, but untill the Apt. is paid for, Keep it simple. |
