|
|
I'm currently in Korea on a student visa (d-4). I changed it from an E-2 cause I wanted to study at Yonsei full time. However When I get a job after school ends I'd prefer not to have to haul ass back to USA just to get a background check. so two questions
1. is it possible to request a background check from korea and if so how?
2. if its not possible, can I have some else request a background check for me? Thanks, and sorry if this has been addressed before, I did look around the forums but didnt find anything related to my specific question. |

I am Canadian, but I have read alittle bit that I think you can get a CRC from overseas. You have only two problems.
First, you have to get fingerprinted. If you are in Seoul I think you need to pick up a form from the embassy. Then you have to find a korean police station to take your prints. I think there is a American Military option like the MPs take it for you even if you are a civilian. But do not quote me on that.
Two, TIME! You need to send it to the FBI and you can expect to wait a few months for a reply.
Once you get your record go to the American Embassy to get it verified/certified. (Actually have they changed that?)
So get on the ball and get rollin.
Good Luck!
PS you will still likely have to do a Japan Visa Trip. Also do not forget your college/univesity transcripts (sealed) and University Degree. |

I'm looking into this right now and it appears that you can.
You do not need fingerprints or an FBI check. You can get a state check have it mailed to you and then verified at the U.S. embassy in Korea. I believe...
The problem I'm running into right now is that if I mail in my request to get the criminal record check it appears that that needs to be notarized too.
Please update if something I said is wrong and/or you complete the process. |

You need to check the sticky's on authenticating a criminal background check from within Korea.
As an American, you can have your CBC sent to you here, go into the US embassy and make a statutory declaration as to the validity of the said CBC and this will be accepted by immigration. Believe it or not!!!!!
However, there are rumours of people that have gone to a Korean police station and had a background check done on their time in Korea. Presumable they havent left the country and are changing jobs?
I am looking into this because I need to change from a C-4, my new background check is taking an eternity to arrive and jobs are passing me by. |

I changed public jobs a couple of years ago (after being here for two years and leaving several times) and was required to have both a CRC from my home country and Korea.
The Korean CRC was free (no charge) and 'painless' i.e. a 10-minute visit to the (main) police station in my city where the girl took a smeared, right thumb print (using red, 'chop' ink) and entered my alien registration number into the data base. Apparently, I have no record of law-breaking in K-land. |

| You can do it from Korea. However, depending on where you are from it may be more or less difficult. I had to have a special fingerprint card sent over, and then I had to have the form done at the local police station. I then had to send it back to the state police who will send me a completed check. This is for New Jersey, which I believe may be one of the more complicated states for a CBC. So, if your from the states you may just want to give your state police a phone call to see what they require. |

If you are Canadian, you can get one from the Winnipeg city police, through the mail, you don't need fingerprints.

hi all, thanks for all your very helpful replies I thought I'd post an update, not that anyone was waiting with baited breath.
I got a fingerprint card from the U.S. Embassy, it was a real pain in the butt and took much longer than it should have getting through security etc..
Getting the fingerprints done was a bit annoying, I had to go to the main police office at Hyochang park, but once there they were very nice and helpful, and there was no fee.
Then I got all the supporting paperwork done and mailed it off to the FBI. my main fear is it will somehow get lost in mail either going there or coming back and I will never see it again. Does it really take months to do the FBI check? I've got a job lined up to start November 1, but the visa process has to be completely finished before then. |
