The Korean who called the Indian prof a smelly Arab was found criminally guilty by a Korean court for his actions.

I think this verdict sucks. He's entitled to free speech. It's not like he threatened to punch the guy.

My co-teacher hates the Japanese. Should I report her to the new Korean thought police?

I don't exactly remember the details of the case...

But didn't it border on harassment?

He called the guy a smelly Arab on the bus. I don't like the idea of hate speech laws.

The Korean got what he deserved- if a person spouts hatred, they better be ready for the consequences.
I hope this leads to more convictions of Koreans purposely making racial slurs in public.

If the media back in the US said even half the stuff that is printed in the Korean media, especially about Koreans in the US, there would be a libel lawsuit.

Kudos to the Indian guy for getting the justice that he deserves!

He called the guy a smelly Arab.

Nothing would happen to you in the US for calling someone a smelly Arab.

It's a free speech issue. I like free speech--even when it's stupid.

But far too often, these "harmless remarks" end up causing some real altercations (maybe not to you or to me, but to others who deal with a-holes like that K-guy).
I believe that this "might" become a precedence to prevent idiots from making remarks that do harm the social balance of society.

Asmith- do you also believe that Korea is truly a historically homogeneous society?

Would I be okay if I denied the holocaust in America? Or France? Austria?

The K government used him to make an example of him. The message: If you are a 19th century dinosaur, shut your pie hole.

Excuse me people, um, over here, yes that's right attention please all you liberal touchy feely types.

Was he smelly? Was he Arab? If so then stfu. If not then you may have a point.

I've smelled some Indian guys that would litterally almost make me throw up.

If I walked into my school and I stunk and somebody called me a smelly Catholic I would laugh and say, yes you are correct sir/mam!

The important point here is the court would have to agree on an operational definition of smelly. Perhaps they could have a jury of 11 smell the Indian and if the majority found that he was in fact "smelly" then the charges would be dropped.

Yes, you have every right in the world to deny the holocaust.

It's your freedom of speech. Most people would then regard you as an idiot.

But you do have the right.

Of course it isn't.

I want the courts out of the life of Mr. Park. He should be free to call the entire foreign population smelly Arabs.

Free speech.
