What's the deal with Richard Quest?
Is he that popular that CNN couldn't fire him? |

He is an openly gay member of the English Bar and has been working for15 or more years. That alone will mean a fair amount. He did some sort of post grad work in the US, but I don;t remember what or where. And I remember being told he did a lot to build journalism in his college years, but not sure what that means. He used to work for BBC.
Anyway, his CV is reasonably strong, which is why he isn;t fired, but if you want more info the wiki on him must have something, assuming someone has included anything in it other than that drug arrest a few years ago. |

just finished watching an advert for his show on CNN and was curious why he was such a fuggin mess.
just googled him and looks like the drug charges were dropped (meth in his pocket) because he did 6 months of drug counselling....his "friend" he was with was ticketed for some other misdemeanor also.
I guess he also had a rope tied to his neck and his balls and a dildo in his boot.

IMHO, just because a guy was getting his rocks off in the park with another guy, high on meth, and with a rope tied around his nuts, doesn't mean he can't do a good job presenting business news stories.
What you do in your own time is your own business..........with the possible exception of those who work with children. |

I think RQ is a diamond geezer and I'm glad CNN kept him on.
Usually, a company would fire him, saying "we can't compromise our reputation!"
But what if that reputation is helped by colorful characters like RQ?
Reporters like RQ are the difference between keeping watching CNN Business Traveler, and flicking over to the movie channel.
And yes, consensual drug-use and sex doesn't show up on the indecency radar. Politicians - paid by the taxpayer - have done the same or far worse.
Go RQ! |

And who doesn't like a little rope-nut time for themselves? It's especially good with a perinium massage |

what if he shoplifted a ring for his lover?
Do you think he should be fired for something like stealing / shoplifting?
Regarding the idea of getting fired for something criminal you do on your own time.....
I once worked with a guy at a school in Tokyo once who was on his day off and shoplifted something or his boyfriend shoplifted something. The cops arrested both of them and then called the English school.
He was fired by the English school because he was arrested for shoplifting....I don't believe he was ever charged.
Another guy I knew in Tokyo teaching English was broke and stole some shaving razors. He as caught, arrested by the police and the police called the school. He was fired.
So, with Richard Quest, couldn't the company legally fire him for this kind of criminal behaviour?
i imagine they did want to fire him but legally maybe they couldn't maybe without him threatening a law suit. |

"Mr. Quest did not realize the park had a curfew and was returning to his hotel with friends," said his lawyer, Alan Abramson. "The matter is scheduled to be dismissed."
A CNN spokeswoman declined to comment.
Quest, an expert on business travel issues, may be best known for his work on "CNN Business Traveller" and for his own hour-long feature program, "Quest."

I fail to see any point discussing what-ifs. |

Depends on his contract. If he is bringing the name of CNN into disrepute then sure he could be fired. Or at least not renewed. |

| I generally like his travel shows but I lost all respect for him when he came to Seoul and did a travel report. He showed the Seoul subway map and said how complicated the system was and advised that travelers to Seoul ride a bicycle instead (as he pedaled down the street). |
