I never ended up getting that tax refund to the tune of 180,000 won.
It was a big mess. I filed in Ilsan. It wasn't easy filing and getting the paperwork, and the guy who helped me in Ilsan didn't tell me the computer showed me as still living in Cheonan (I left Cheonan two years before then). Anyway, I waited and got nothing in my bank account.
I was busy and didn't want to go again, and a fellow poster said they were going to maybe do it later. Anyway, I went back some weeks before I was to leave Korea just for some peace of mind to know what in blazes happen. They had me still listed in Cheonan and sent some paper to Cheonan instead of depositing money in my account.

They said they couldn't deposit it, because they put the info on the computer connected to my passport, not my ARC. It was weird.
Anyway, they were going to try to get me the money before I left, but
instead of fixing things and depositing the money, Cheonan decided to mail me something. I ran out of time and left without the money.
Who knows if Cheonan actually sent anything.

I don't know what was so hard about them getting that right. Of course, it was my mistake not to check with the office again earlier, but I don't like dealing with Korean bureaucracy, and for foreigners it's not always easy to deal with it.

The ladies in the office in Ilsan tried their best to help me, but they couldn't, and it was because of the errors on the part of the tax office in Cheonan and the guy who filed my paperwork in Ilsan in the first place who never told me there was a problem.

I did, adverturer.

But our uni filed for us and gave us our money... so we never had to do any filing.

Yeah, I think if my hagwon had helped me out, it would have been different. I didn't really have Koreans I could really call on to ask for help. I wasn't going to trouble my co-workers to come with me. It is uber important to have your job or to have a dependable Korean handy.
I would definitely urge folks to learn a ton of Korean and not have the attitude that only people in Korea speak Korean. It wouldn't hurt to learn more. I learned some, and it was helpful.

Anyway, it's really not easy dealing with bureaucracy in Korea. Koreans will tell you that.

I thought I wasn't going to get it, but when I got back from vacation last week I had a kind of check-like thing in the mail for 240,000. So maybe there is still hope.

Ok what are you guys talking about? This is the first I've heard of it. The mail box at my apartment is a cluster**** so I doubt I would even find something sent to me. Who is eligible for this refund? I've been Korea (Seoul) for one year as of last week.

When did you receive your tax refunds? I'm still waiting for mine. I was told it would be a direct deposit, not through the mail.

As far as I understood, some people received via deposit. However, it may appear from what some posters have said, that they didn't get it, either. Anyway, if you've been around for a few years, you should have had some sort of refund. Follow up and go to the tax office if you applied. I did sort of do that, but it was kind of late in the game, and Korean bureaucracy can be messy. If I were staying another month, I would have gotten it, probably.

Still, if they were doing their job properly, I would have had it ages ago. You have to assume things can mess up with this stuff especially if you don't have a university helping you. Hagwons often won't help with this stuff, because they only care about how you make them money with some exceptions. Initially, my manager wasn't being very helpful in terms of providing the paperwork. He did come through later and got me the papers, but I was pretty much on my own when it came to the tax thing.

Hey Adventurer, can you tell me please, I have been in Korea for 3 years now. Is this somethin I should have got? If so, is 'tax refund' the phrase I need to enquire about this?

I take it is something everyone should have who has been here over a year?

My boss said her accountant is dealing with the issue. How long does it take to transfer?
