| So I'm watching Criminal Minds, and there is a quick scene where the guy stabs a woman in the chest with a butcher knife. Ok, quick and simple, not much to it. Here's what I don't understand. The knife is all blurred out. Ok, don't like violence, ok, censored, got it. Well, don't get it, we can still tell what it is, but understand it. But when he stabs the woman, the blood gushing out of her chest is clear as day....... Umm..... Ok.....? |

I am assuming this was on Korean television. Logic seems to be a long lost art in the Hermit Kingdom.
Think of it like this: The actual physical act of the stabbing is synonomous with "saving face". The after effects of said act ("saving face") are irrelevant (blood pouring all over the place)!!! |

Simple. It's to lower the rating. And why the law forbids knives to be seen for that certain rating? I don't know.
Anyhow, it's pretty much the same in the states. I've seen an American documentary with every sharp object in it blurred. |

| Heh, a similar situation to that was Titanic on K TV. They blur out Kate Winslet's breasts, but the drawing of her breasts is ok to see! |

Are you serious? This is absolutely assinine!! By that logic, your mother chopping onions for tonight's stew with a nice fat blade is blurred out because it's a sharp object?
Not showing the actual knife is OK, but showing the blood from a human spewing all over the place is acceptable. Please explain the logic on this one. |

Are you asking ME why it's blurred? How the heck should I know. There were no old ladies chopping onions in that one. In other words - the knife wasn't in the place it belonged - your mom's kitchen. The topic of this doc was 'murder' and the people left behind. (one of the DVD-extra features for 'Sunshine Cleaning' if you must know)
Here is my logic tho-
If it has something to do with preventing similar crimes, it IS logical. Cause and effect. What caused the effect? The knife. And what's a knife for?
They don't want the kids to think a condom is a preferable substitute for a balloon. wait...the other way around.

people are more squeamish to the idea of sharp objects because the idea of getting stabbed is not wonderful.
Westerners are desensitized to that kind of violence and gratuity.
The only thing I don't get is why there is softcore porn on everynight but they blur out my sharp objects.
kind of the exact reverse of the western world but... actually to me Korea's logic makes more sense in the grand scheme of things |

It is singular, singularly tight assed. It is Puritan.
Violence is broadly tolerated, and welcomed, which makes sense considering they burned suspected "witches" at the stake, but fear of sexuality runs rampantly unabated, once again making sense considering they branded women with scarlet "A" letters to be worn on their dresses.
In almost every other developed country, including all other Western countries, what you call "softore porn" exists on late night public TV.

The only thing I did understand, and which I can respond to is the softcore pron reference. And no, it's not accessible in all western countries on regular cable television. Korean TV (at least where I am) has a lot of frontal nudity. In America, it's never on, and I stay up late channel surfing. Whereas I click through 40 channels here and there are usually 3-4 programs that will have frontal nudity that are "softcore" |

Amerika - does NOT - repeat NOT equal "the West".
it is singular. It is singularly tightassed about all things sexual. It is Puritan.
"The West" is a term which would probably comprise at least about 20 countries of which Amerika is merely ONE.
it is the only Puritan country in the brood (along with Canada to a certain extent, but they're really pretty much the same culturally)
it is the only country which has an active religious right which has ANY political power.
it is the only country that not only illegalizes prostitution but actively prosecutes it.
Now.. what is it that you don't exactly understand?
Amerika is not the West.

once again, there is a distinction between "the West" and Amerika (and yes I am mispelling it on purpose though if I really wanted to get pointed I'd spell it as Amerikka)
While fascinatingly sexually repressed, Amerika has far less repression when it comes to portraying,. much less promoting violence.
the mathematical expression would be as follows
Amerika allows (and glorifies) far less "sex" in its culture than the West.
(remember the hubbub over a split second shot of Janet Jackson's Superbowl nipple that no one really saw unless captured in slo-mo on a hold screen shot)
America allows (and glorifies) far more violence than the West. |
