"do you know Dokto?"
"yes I do"
"do you think Dokto belong to Korea?"
"Well I'm not an expert on the subject. All I know is that both sides have a long history with the island and when Japan occupied Korea, returning it was never part of the peace treaty after the war ended. I think a lot of Koreans feel very strongly about it. Let me ask you though, how would you benefit if Dokto belonged to Korea."
"If Korea rich, I rich"
"I think the Korean government might become slightly more wealthier but im not sure how your life would dramatically improve if Dokto belonged to Korea"
"...It's a national pride thing"
"Penicillin and insulin were discovered by scientists in Canada. Should I take pride in the fact that people I never met did something to change the world?"
"....." |

As far as I'm concerned, national and racial pride is only a way to use the achievements of others as an excuse to feel better about yourself. |

As an American I am totally taking pride in the Double Down Chicken sandwich. You fools else where in the world are still eating sandwiches with bread, America scores again!

Penicillin is generally accepted to have been discovered by Alexander Fleming, a Scotsman who was working in London, England (not Ontario). There are valid claims that a few earlier scientists discovered it first but they never capitalized on it and I don't think any of them were Canadian. Of course, at that time Canadians carried British passports so it was all the same thing anyway... |
