I have a friend coming to visit for a while, and I wanted to show him a good time. What are some classier joints around Seoul? I've heard some good things about "Top of Cloud" or some kind of restaurant on top of a skyscraper near Jongno 1-ga. Anyone have some help? I hear its a bit pricey--is it worth it? Jazz music or something?
Really just wanted one ritzy place to burn cash---I think one night is all i can stomach of spending 20k on one beer. |

If you want to drop some serious money then head to Pierre Gagnaire in Myeongdong:
http://www.pierregagnaire.co.kr/pierre_en/main.html
The lunch menu (weekdays only) is pretty spectacular.
For an evening you could try Salvatore Cuomo in Apkujong (just do a google) and then cocktails afterwards at Coffee Bar K:

Can't remember the website but this gives you a good idea of the place.
Sure to impress |

The bar you're talking about is "Top Cloud" on the 33rd floor of the Samsung Jongno Tower outside of Jonggak Station. Here's a link:

And here's a picture:

The bar is located in the part that is separate from the rest of the building |

Gulp. Damnit, I'm pretty good about happiness regarding my modest income, but sometimes I wish I were rich. Thanks for the suggestions |

Top Cloud is good, but its more of a place you take a girl to on a date. If that's your angle then go for it. They have a dinner buffet that is pretty good. However, the buffet ends around 8 or 9. When the buffet ends, they dim the lights, light candles, and the jazz band plays songs. The view from the restaurant is spectacular.
South of the river, you should go to Once in a Blue Moon. Its a nice live Jazz place. I recommend getting a table up on the 2nd floor.
If you are looking to spend a lot on a good meal, then the hotel restaurants are also good. The hilton, the Grand Hyatt have good restaurants and bars.
If you can, find one of them whiskey bars/lounges on the top floor of buildings. There is one called Zoot in Mokdong, and I'm sure you'll find a lot of others. Order a bottle of liquor and relax with your personal bartender (these are bars, not room salons.)
If you REALLY want to show your friend a good time, and money is no object, head to Gangnam and throw down $1000-$2000 for a room salon room (aka business clubs). i've never been to one, but all the business men in Korea (Korean and Foreign) rave about them. |

The owner's French - he either brings cheese with him when he goes back or gets it shipped to him. It's a great place - nice little terrace as well. |

Sweeping generalisation there!
Are you saying that you actually cannot afford a 90k meal or rather that you wouldn't want to spend the money? If it's the latter then fair enough, I completely understand.
If you can't afford it then - where does your money go?? |

perhaps he meant no English teacher can afford [to go to those places regularly]? I mean, I sure as hell admit I'm pretty frugal and skimp on a lot of things, and I'd say that there's no way I could afford those places. But, to my social class, these kinds of restaurants are once in a blue moon type of deals. Go once maybe every other year or something. I can't imagine spending more than 200k on a single meal more than once a year. Of course, I'm poor, so there's that. |

I seriously doubt it would be worth the money. Most of those prices for the entree were over 100,000 won. Add to that salad and dessert and you've got about a 400,000 won meal, along with the 10% tax on top of that. Screw that. |

I did say a lunchtime - so you can get a set menu for 90k. It is definitely worth 90k.
The OP was asking for a "ritzy place to burn some cash" - so no, these aren't everyday places but in response to the question, they're ritzy places to, well, burn cash - and have a good meal, cocktail or glass of wine in the process. |
