Hi,
I'm interested in building a cheap computer which will be solely used for downloading.
The only real requirements I have are that it runs reasonably quick (boot and navigating windows) and I want a terabyte drive or two.
Considering that I could get deals like this back at home: http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=0&t=1538775&highlight=desktop would I be able to get the kind of computer I described for around $150-200? |

If you want quick and you're just downloading, why are you using windows?
If you want a box set up to just run torrents or whatever, just use linux.
You're not going to get 2 1 terrabyte drives for $150 let alone the whole machine
at a minimum you need:
1 case
1 motherboard (with integrated video and network)
1 cpu
1 powersupply
1 optical drive
some ram
plus your hard drives
maybe if you start looking second hand.. hit up craigs list. If you build that with the cheapest current parts I still doubt you're going to get under $200. If you're lucky you might get around 200 without the hard drives. |

Or you can just buy a used machine in Yongsan. Stick in some new HDD's. |

Thanks for the reply.
Whoops, brain fart. Yeah, there is no way I'd get a computer that cheap including the hard drives.
Anyway, was thinking about pulling the trigger on this: http://english.gmarket.co.kr/challenge/neo_goods/goods.asp?goodscode=122207828
Although I can't read Korean at all so I'm not sure if that's actually a working computer or just a case. |

They often have several used machines set up outside the front of the Sun-in (sp?) building. There are also several more if you take the left front entrance and walk as far as you can until you reach a fork in the hall, then go left and keep walking down that corridor. That's where the used stuff is (if my memory is correct). |

I bought a machine off of Gmarket. Terabyte of memory, burner -- total cost approx 330,000. Delivered to my office the next day and took 5 min. to throw in the disc and set up....... Works like a dream.

Do you happen to have a link to the same machine? That sounds great.
Also, I attended one of your lectures for this year's SMOE orientation. I can't tell you how much it's helped me--it's my first time teaching. |

BB,
I just checked out your link and that's the machine I got! Actually just the same Chic shell. I got it about a month back during their summer sale - checked and don't see the same prices (they had about a 30% discount)
However, get a Korean friend/coteacher to go through the dropdown lists with you and you can build your own. (you can pay by bank transfer) Might work out to being pricier though. However, it does work and easy to get going. I had XP and Microsoft Office so didn't need to pay for the software.
Glad I could help out at orientation and just tried my best. Not easy to cover such a broad topic and in lecture hall facilities too....
Cheers,
DD

Just to clarify, you mean you got a TB of storage. Having a machine with a TB of RAM is still a few years off, I think! |
