Hi, i'm making my lesson plan thats due Friday and next week I will teach the class how to compare objects by using words like "bigger," "faster," "taller," etc.
Basically I was going to start class off with a CD-rom and explain what they mean. AFter that I was going to play a clip from a popular video game, Tekken 6, on youtube and ask them who is stronger, taller, faster, etc.
I also made a powerpoint with pictures comparing people. For example, I have the tallest guy in the world walking beside his wife who is much shorter than him. However, I wanted to see if there was a powerpoint out there with better pictures than what I have. Also, I'm trying to find a game or think of a game that I can make with this topic. Any ideas???

this lesson will be divided into 3 parts, so next week the kids will only learn "bigger," "longer," "faster," "taller," and "stronger." This class is also a 6th grade class.

Thanks in advance!

I usually combine my lesson on comparatives with a lesson on animals. I begin by reviewing animal names with the students, and then I have students generate sentences about animals using comparatives. (an elephant is bigger than a mouse, a cheetah is faster than a tiger, etc.)

thats a good idea but how do I make it more "cool." these are 6th graders and some of these students don't like to be treated like 3rd graders if you know what i mean.

Teach them "So what" "Big deal" "Who cares" and get them bragging. Kids love to brag, even in English. That can endlessly repeat the target language...

My ...... is .....er / more .... than your .......

So what / who cares? / Big deal.

Then maybe try the Fling the teacher comparatives game

I did that lesson today. I taught them '-er' suffix. We followed the text (because the co-t said so) We finished early so practiced telling the partner: I am
-taller than you
-stronger than you
-smarter than you
-richer than you
-older than you. Call me Hyung/Un-ni/O-bba/Nu-na responded by

-I don't think so
-No way Jose
-I could, not going to.

For some reason they refused to say:
-prettier than you

6th grade hasn't learnt 'more', yet.

I like the Fling the teacher game although I think some of the questions will be too hard for them so I think I'll make my own version. I am very shocked with how horrible the book is! There are so many errors! For example, I also teach 5th grade with a co-teacher and the topic was along the lines of table manners. The co-teacher was teaching the class to say "I'm enough" instead of "I've had enough" to tell someone that you're full. Once I corrected her, she told me that it was in the Teacher's Guide!

Also, some kids in the class really don't want to learn English because it more of a minor subject.

*sigh*

This is the reason why I'm trying to make the classroom more fun so they can look forward to coming to my class. I actually have alot of freedom here because they want me to teach 70% of the class and the Korean co-teacher to teach the rest.

OP,

check out the lesson plans, and the full lesson with "driving cars" under worksheets. A lot of it may be too difficult, but, some of it may be useable.

not really a lesson plan but...

1/
game - duels
you get them in a circle - shoot one guy with a 'fingers gun thing' -and shout something like 'big' he drops to the floor, the 2 guys on either side of him have to do a duel and shout something like 'im bigger' or whatever and shoot each other. next person - small - smaller, im smaller, youre smaller etc etc. last man standing wins.

2/

look on daves idea cookbook, theres a good idea for an 'olymics' game (which you could modify - i did) where your testing to see who is stronger, faster etc.

Use that Daft Punk video with the fingers... It would be perfect for this class.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Find a topic they like and show a few clips of it and get them to make up 5 sentences.

If they can't make sentences , do mind maps.

This week I put a picture of Bugs bunny up using youtube.

The kids made 2 mind maps and 5 sentences.

They were told speed was the goal.

1st mind map was just list 10 things- carrot, book, ears, legs, ect...
2nd mind map was decribe 10 things about bugs bunny-long legs, white and grey fur, reading a book, eating a orange carrot.

then they made 5 sentences from their descriptions and we talked about them in class and I corrected their sentences.

This gives all the students a chance to do something and they are learning how to think quickly and structure language.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUYZYJ7XueI

Here is the video and it was stopped at 1:17 and the kids just talked about that frame with him reading a book.

Do they have a solid understanding of adjectives? You don't want to kick off with 'bigger' when you need to explain 'big'.

Oh they have a solid understanding of adjectives so that should not be a problem.
