I can't stand to use most Microsoft products, but I need (okay, want) to buy a netbook sometime in the near future. Does anyone have any experience with using Android on one? I feel that Windows in all current forms is too bloated to work on a netbook, and I'm not willing to put up with the limitations of the bullshit Windows 7 Starter Edition, or the jam-packed bugs that it will surely have. If I have to pay to upgrade the Starter Edition it defeats the purpose of buying a cheap netbook and also pisses me off. I've read predictions that netbooks could be mass-produced with Android in three to nine months, and I can wait that long if it's reasonably functional, so I'm just wondering what anyone's impressions are.

Stick with Eeebuntu until Android is a more viable option. I have no experience with either, but Eeebuntu is most people's current choice of Linux for netbooks. I ran an older version of Ubuntu on a Samsung laptop for a year and loved it.

I've been waffling on getting a netbook for nearly a year now. I'm really interested in Hansung's lineup:

They're Korean made. You can get them at a more reasonable price here than the Asus, Acer and Samsungs even.

Interestingly, they don't offer windows with their machines. A couple of their laptops are advertised as coming with Free DOS, but most ads make no mention of OS at all. (Meaning they probably just come with an illegal install of some version of windows.)

Given my basic surfing needs, I'm soooo happy that I purchased an I-pod touch over a netbook. Even though they are small, I find netbooks to still be an albatross to carry around.

I thought about that, mainly for portability and e-book reading, but I also need to be able to do some word processing and using AIM on the touch seems like it would be maddening.

Same here. I need a decent keyboard and some balls under the hood for Csound, spreadsheets and making lesson plans and presentations.

i'd go with ubuntu or puppy linux, personally if was feeling particularly adverse to windows. but practically speaking, you can find hacked, barebones versions of xp that are pretty much tailor made for a netbook.

I got the Hansung. Installed Eeebuntu Standard 3.0, but the trackpad and webcam are not working at all. Considering everything else is working near perfectly on an unsupported netbook, I think I'm doing pretty well.

I'm working on some solutions with a guy who knows Linux much better than I do in the Eeebuntu forums.

I'm rocking Easy Peasy on my Asus 901. It handles like a dream, and is built off the Ubuntu base. Comes with Skype and some other stuff installed, and has about a gig worth of footprint.
