I like the Pokemon tv manga, so was amused to read the following sociological critiques of the franchise.

"Pokmon has been criticized by some Christians, Jews, and Muslims; Christian concerns over Pokmon have primarily addressed perceived occultic and violent themes as well as the concept of "Pokmon evolution" (which some relate to the theory of evolution), which is said to go against the Biblical creation account in Genesis.

The Vatican, however, has countered that the Pokmon trading card game and video games are "full of inventive imagination" and have no "harmful moral side effects".

In the United Kingdom, the "Christian Power Cards" game was introduced in 1999 by David Tate who stated, "Some people aren't happy with Pokmon and want an alternative, others just want Christian games." The game was similar to the Pokmon TCG but used Biblical figures.

In 1999, the Jewish civil rights group Anti-Defamation League also pressured Nintendo to edit the image of the Pokmon trading cards for Golbat and Ditto because the cards depicted a left-facing manji, which the League interpreted as antisemitism, although these cards had been intended for sale only in Japan with Nintendo planning to release edited versions in North America the following year.

In 2001, Saudi Arabia banned Pokmon games and cards, alleging that the franchise promoted Zionism in violation of Muslim doctrine.

Pokmon has also been accused of promoting materialism.

In 1999, two nine-year-old boys sued Nintendo because they claimed that the Pokmon Trading Card Game caused their problematic gambling.

Been there, done that. There was a religious outcry over the Smurfs because of Gargamel's witchcraft. Some people were also upset because they thought the Smurfs were communists.

This page has some great info. Be sure to check out the Unicef sponsored ad showing Smurf Village getting bombed to raise awareness of the situation in Burundi.

As soon as we begin to conquer these so called innocent games our children are playing, the sooner our world will become a more peaceful one.

What people don't understand is that it's not just the pokster that is degrading the minds and spirits of our children but it's the cumulative affect of that and all the other sources of violence and unethical behavior our children are subjected to from a very young age.

Promoting materialism? Yeah, I can believe that.

Almost all the money I used to earn through my allowance and babysitting used to go to Pokemon trading cards, figurines, posters, games and all that crazy stuff.

Never could get a Charizard or Lugia card though. :/ That sucked.

I like to believe I've outgrown that crazy franchise, but I continue to see myself buying the latest game, despite it being a rehash of the previous.

Yes, I do want to buy the remake of Silver and Gold. Embarassed Silver was my favorite....

And gambling addiction? Possibly. There were some intense kids out there...

The religious stuff always makes me scratch my head. Only they would notice crazy things like that.

I know one of the towns near my hometown banned Yu-Gi-Oh cards because it promoted demons and the devil. It's a pretty religious town Fun, fun.
