I've been on this forum for about couple of days now, and what is up with all of the non-sense illogical threads being posted up all over the place?

how seriously do you take them?

call me a troll if you wish, it's just hilarious

Not at all. Dave's is an awesome place to blow off steam and keep up-to-date on the latest gossip in the ESL community.

Most of the time no, but it depends on the context. There's lots of good general info and job advice in this forum. You just have to take a lot of stuff on here with a huge grain of salt!

Amid the gripes, there is some decent info. The fact that Dave's forums have been around for so many years means that they serve a purpose.

Dave's has been very helpful at times but a lot of info also comes from experience, improvisation, and general common sense. I browse Dave's a lot but I hardly take most for gospel. If I were to have believed all the negativity 18 months ago prior to coming to Korea, I probably never would have come. But I did, and Dave's prepared me for the worst, and it's probably never been 95% as bad as the stuff I read here, but maybe that's just my ignorance or good luck.

That said, this forum really can be incredibly helpful to network with others of similar interest and get some help, advice, or blow off steam. As silly as it sounds to say, I'll always remember this forum as part of my 'life in Korea' ritual, alongside making coffee, reading the paper, etc.

Would you take the philosophical musings of some former cashier from Dunkin Donuts seriously?

Depends on the poster, generally. The idiots tend to outnumber the helpful people, unfortuantely.

There is the occasional useful thread among the piles of drivel.

It would be so much better if the mods realised that this is not such a serious place and lightened up a little bit. Telling people off for using words like douche is a little OTT in my book, but I guess we agreed to the TOS etc.....

One of the main things that irk me is how obvious it is when people have not traveled outside of their home country before. Ever.

Take for example the sheer number of blanketing statements people write on this board. These are all real quotes:

"Koreans are peasants."

"All the gym equipment is 'fitted for Asian limbs' so I can't use them." - what, are you a flipping giant? Being unable to use a machine at a gym is usually a universal experience, even if the machines were made in China. No pun intended.

"It used to be so easy to get laid here. Not anymore, man." - Dude, I feel your pain. But really, is that what's making the country worse for you? Do you actually work here?

"After all, this is Korea." - Yes, it is. How would you like it if I said: "After all, this is America." WHERE in America exactly? Baltimore? Miami? Iowa? Detroit?

Yes, Koreans are far more homogeneous than Americans (America is the mutt of the world) but that doesn't mean people can just go around racially profiling an entire country based on a few experiences they've had.

Yet, this will always happen on this forum and there's nothing the Mods can do about it. (I understand why.)

Way more idiots than people with some measure of tact and thoughtfulness here though. That's the bottom line.

about 50 / 50

Some of it you just can't take seriously, Anytime a post about women or Korea sucks in general rises up... it's a pointless but fun topic.

But then some of the debatable issues such as court cases or people in trouble or students can be serious stuff.

I spend many sleepless nights about what happened to Tony and AETK wondering will it ever be the same? Even when i take my showers... I cry.

Er...this is true. All the machines at my gym put me at an awkward angle, and I can't get full extension on lat pull downs. But I don't use the machines anyways b/c they don't engage stabilizer muscles and can lead to injury.

I've been here for almost 4 years now and the themes running through the threads tend to become a bit repetitive.
Such as:
"Korean food/beer is disgusting"
"Dog meat - for/against"
"How can I bang more Korean women?"
"Korean men are wife beaters, and they better not do it in front of me.."
"Western women are fat and ugly"
"Is Itaewon a dump?"
"Korean women are gold-diggers"

There are others that tend to come up quite often, but I can't remember them right now.
Despite the often ill-informed and self-righteous babble on this site, I find myself drawn back to the site almost without thinking every time I open the browser.
