I wired home money from a KB branch in Incheon, and have consistently done that for the last year or so, and sent from another branch on occasion.

Today, due to personal schedule, I went to the KB branch nearest to my home in Bucheon, and after 10 minutes of filling out this and signing this, I was told that, because I am a foreigner, I can't send money home from this branch, because I was 'locked in' to send only from the branch in Incheon. They did this wonderful favour for me without asking me.

I am likely to tell this lady that her bank is a piece of mod edit, so I called my wife and passed the phone over. The lady told her that she can do it, but she had to phone to the Incheon branch and ask her to fax some documents. After about 45 minutes, it got done.

I found this odd, as I have changed branches many times in the past and never had a problem. I had all of my documents ready to go, so that's no excuse.

Either KB has a new sparkling policy, or the Kimovernment decided that our lives here are too convenient.

Time to change branches. I've never had that happen here. The only problem with my old bank Woori, was that they consistently tried to get my passport to write the transaction in it, and I repeatedly told them that only immigration can write in my passport

Hi There,

It happened to me recently that I ran to a branch of the KB before close only to find out the same thing.

Since then remitting with KB for me has always been via atm. I might say I do not miss the problems each time or the wait. I even think the staff were always uncertain of the process and had to ask each time.

No point in breaking my neck to make the bank hours either, any ATM will remit it just needs to be set up the first time at your branch. Less chance of error too.

Good luck in the future.

It must be a KB policy. They told me that at my branch too. Sad

I tried sending money home from a different KB brank than usual (not that I have a usual to begin with) and they said they couldn't do it either. So I used the ATM to do the international remittance. Took about 2 minutes and could do it from any KB ATM at my convenience.

I'm with Hana Bank, and I haven't had a single problem when transferring money to my US bank account. In fact, they even waved the wire transfer fee for me one time. Very Happy

I use KB. Why don't you set it up so that you can transfer money from Korea to your country via ATM?

I had the same thing happen to me 2 weeks ago. The put in a new law because some people were just transferring money from a variety of banks and ended up embezzling somehow. Anyway, its a law in Korea now so whatever bank you transfer from for the first time - you can only transfer from that bank for one year.

Nah, if you moved to a new city, you would just need to fill out the paperwork again. Bank address, bank account number, beneficiary, and show your payslips. After transferring it, you'll get a receipt from them that if you bring next time, it wil cut the time in half.

This is true. Certain banks that are ill informed lock you into a primary branch. You can wire up to 1 mill. (I think) at any branch but for anything more you have to go to your main branch.

Just use the ATM, there are no restrictions.

Care to provide a brief walkthough?

I'm guessing I just tell them I want to be able to transfer from the ATM - I give them my home account info, and voila?

Yes! I can verify this.

I have been sending money home each month through the Hana bank for the last 8 years and I have never had a problem.

Once, I walked in and gave over the paper to send $10,000 home.

The girl behind the counter did not even blink and sent it within 2 minutes (super fast) - because normally it takes 5 minutes.

But - 2 minutes or 5 minutes doesn't bother me - they just do it - quickly - no questions asked.

Tell them you want to do an overseas remittance via ATM. You have to fill out a form that includes a Swift code for your home bank (if I recall), so you may have to bring it home and do some research. Once that's done, go back with your passport and the form and they'll have it done in ~20min. After that, it's a one minute process from the ATM each time you want to remit (plus the fees are lower on KB's end).
