Hey all-

Quick question, especially for the women here:

What has been your experience dating in Korea? I'm sure there are plenty of Western guys, but what about Korean men? I'm just not sure what to expect when I get over there!

Any advice as to how to meet people, places to go...or alternatively, things to watch out for?

Thanks!

Many different kinds of men. Many different places to meet them. Things to watch out for: same as back home.

Well, maybe if you have questions that are a little more specific?

OK, specific questions:

What has been striking about the way Korean men treat western women? What kind of cultural taboos are there about interracial dating? What misunderstandings often arise between Korean men and western women?

I was kind of just opening up the floor on the topic. Specifically, like I said, what kind of experiences have you/people you've known had that made an impression on you?

Alright. Like I said, there are many different kinds of (Korean) men. You can't paint them all with the same brush. But as far as general dating culture goes, there are a few fundamental differences, I think.

1. They tend to call/text a lot, seemingly for no reason. I was confused for ages by this. Why are you calling me fifteen minutes after we said goodbye, when you get home, to say essentially nothing? Apparently, this is expected by Korean girls and if he's never dated a Western girl before, in general, he won't know that this can come off as slightly puzzling. Also, they tend to save 'important' dates you mention in your personal life in their phone calendars and text with great precision to wish you luck or ask you how something went, even if you haven't mentioned it for ages. Most also send random texts just saying have a good day at work or whatever.

2. They tend to want to plan and organize absolutely everything when you're together. Really pissed me off before I had some more honest conversations with a few different Korean guys and realized what was at the root of it. Even if we were out on my invitation, sometimes they want to choose where we eat, what we do, and keep trying to take control of the situation. After confronting one guy in particular about this tendency, he explained that, in general, Korean girls want to know men are capable of keeping them entertained, essentially -- that it's an important part of the wooing process that the man can make a date exciting and interesting. Some Korean men can feel a little uncomfortable when you start to take over in this area, as it sends out a rather strong 'friend zone' vibe.

3. Their mothers. Again, it's not all of them. But a lot of them still live at home (it's common here for young adults who aren't married, and isn't considered a taboo when considering a partner, as it is back home) and you may often hear, "I have to be home by ___ because if I'm not, my mom will get angry," or, "I can't go out tonight because we stayed out all night last night and my mom is angry."

4. If you get a 'good' guy, he may slightly panic the first time you suggest he comes over to your apartment, even if it's during sober daylight hours to cook a meal or watch a movie.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Speaking as a guy who knows professional women or what you call working girls in the us and as frinds only! Mind you, everyone is not the same, but a majority of Korean guys who come to the US and look for a working girl...well lets put it this way,the girls said," I think I felt something?" Just my two cents and I do not claim to be Don Juan, but I do not have that problem.

I have my reasons for thinking they're absurd Smile

"I think I felt something?" For every guy? Really?
