For 42" a quality 720p set would do you just fine and you'd probably save a bundle. You'd have to have damn good eye sight to even notice a difference between 720p and 1080p at that size unless you're sitting within 3 feet of the screen. I love how people refer to 1080p as "Full" or "True" HD, great marketing to get everyone to think their 3 year old Aquos is already obsolete... |

Oooh, very interesting! I do have pretty amazing eyesight, and I can usually spot the difference between 720p and 1080p in the demo rooms. However, I must admit that I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to spotting marketing gimmicks like TRUE HD or FULL HD. Thanks for the heads up! |

Well if you can get a good deal on a 1080p set then go for it.
I'm just saying if it came down to a matter of saving 200,000 won for a quality 720p set I'd get that every time. Most content you'd be feeding it would be native 720p anyway (360 and PS3 games rarely output 1080p and when they do it's nothing mind blowing) and even when you do get to feed it 1080p content your eyes most likely won't be able to spot the difference on a 42" set. That was my point  |

Well if you can get a good deal on a 1080p set then go for it.

| I bought an open frame one from daum cafe. 42 inch, 1080p, 120hz. Under a million including the stand. It works well for gaming and a PC monitor. |

a nice bonus is the 240hz "true motion" feature.
You can find a similar TV in the US but I believe this one is unique to Korea.
The site says 1.2 million but my wife found ours for right at a mill.
This replaced our Crossover 24" Full HD TV, and the difference is night and day. |

Picked up a new model 1080p 40" Samsung PAVV LCD with 80,000:1 contrast for 950,000 at HomePlus. Not sure if I paid too much, but I split it with my girlfriend. Plus the salesman threw in a bunch of Ramen. I think he was just trying to outsell the LG guy trying to sell us on a 47" LG XCanvas nearby.
Quite simply, can't believe how gorgeous Xbox 360 looks on it at full resolution. |

I sure as hell have never said that. Quite the opposite.
Korea is a protectionist market, with a population who believe completely in these two things. 1. Anything Made in Korea is high quality. 2. Anything expensive must be high quality and desirable as a status symbol.
Put those two things together and it basically means, Samsung and LG can name their prices. |

A trip to Taiwan (the other leading electronics country outside of Japan) revealed the same high prices we see in Korea... except for Taiwanese made panels. Protectionism is part of the problem, buying power is another. North America simply consumes the most electronics thus they benefit the most by the economies of scale involved. A country like Canada may only have 33 million people, but considering most live in houses and most probably have multiple LCD panels, computers etc (living room, furnished basement in some cases, bedrooms...) the average family not only makes more than the average Korean family, but also consumes a lot more. It doesn't take much to see why a small country like Canada gets better prices than a bigger country like Korea on most goods. Now add the USA to that 33 million and treat it like a single market and throw in retailers like Best Buy and Wal Mart making mass purchases on a scale the Asian retailers can't match and well.... it's easy to see why North America enjoys the best pricing anywhere on their electronics goods. |
