Bit hard to tell without more info. Who did you apply to? Hagwon or PS? Elementary or MS os HS? Do you have other qualities that Koreans detest in ESL teachers such as non-USA citizenship or no-white skin?

The ideal candidate is a physically fit, Canadian, white, blond haired, blue eyed, 22 year old girl fresh out of school. Male of that type is second best. Start changing eye and hair colour for third best. Adjust age up to 30 or so for fourth best. Fat is better than not white, for fifth....... Actually maybe second best is first without finishing school.

The key to jobs in Korea is being on the ground. You can get a job if you can start right away. That is what I have always found. It may not be 100% legal, but you'll get a job.

Being older means they cant push you around and intimidate you. The average hagwan owner doesnt like that

You will get an English teaching job here in Korea, regardless of your age. Guaranteed.

Yes, agism (discrimination based on age) is a real problem here in Korea.
So is sexism, racism, lookism (discrimination based on appearance) and discrimination based on martial status.

But the demand for ESL teachers is so great that all one has to do is keep on applying until one lands a job. And they will land a job. Guaranteed.

I've had a number of teachers here in Korea who were over 40, 50 or 60 as co-workers. Yes, the vast majority were in their 20s and 30s, but still I've had older ones as well.

So don't let the possibility of being a victim of agism affect your desire to teach in Korea.

You will get a job. Guaranteed. The demand is that great. They will accept anyone who can get an English teaching visa to teach English here.

Very Happy

This is not true anymore. SMOE just turned down 100 English teachers, because there were more people than positions. I've heard that GEPIK is supposed to hit its quote as well come September...don't know about EPIK though. Hakwons also appear to be more choosy these days as well.

He might get a job...I wouldn't say it is "guaranteed" though.

there are numerous threads on here in regards to older teachers that are 50+ and secured work. Try doing a search....if the search function isnt completly screwed as it has been before.

Last GEPIK stat on age of teachers was like 20's 30%, 30's 30%, 40' 10%, and 50's 10%. Can't remember the exact numbers but rough numbers were around there.

EPIK has put in a "no one over 50" rule.
