Ok, so i just started talking to this recruiter 2 hours ago and now suddenly she's pushing me to take a position starting in 2 weeks in gwanju (not my preferred place, but it'l do). the contract looks solid, the photos of the apt are nice, but she says i'd be the only ft english teacher there, i cant talk to anyone at the school, and she needs an answer in 12hours.
competitive job market makes me think take what i can get, but spidey sense screams bail.

Judges?

Uh...competitive job market means that job wouldn't be open in the first place if it were worth having. Agree?

It's your call, but I'd ask her to bump the salary up a bit. Sounds like she's desperate. Not that this will get you anywhere, but you shouldn't be going for this job anyway. That's my opinion.

First of all, Gwanju is a tiny hamlet in ChungchungBukDo. Is this Gwangju Gyunggi-do? or Gwangju, JeollaNamDo? Then again, either locations are Ok, so take it.

I wouldn't do it also. I took my first job offer given to me that started right away and I HATE it... Good luck to your future job offers.

Isn't there some K-law about E-2s not allowed to teach kindergarten?

Andrew, that law/rule refers to Korean kindies, not hogwon kimdy classes.

As for the OP, I know of a job in the smaller Gwangyu that is available due to visa complications with the baout to start teacher so not all immediate starts are dodgy. I thought this was that job until I saw it was the big Gwangyu.

I highly doubt it`s `set`....especially as it`s a hagwon. I don`t work for haggys anymore but I (as well as friends) have always negotiated a bump in the original proposed salary etc when I did.

With PS you can`t negotiate salaries (unless it`s private) but hagwons, you can negotiate. Don`t let them low ball you.

ok, this seems odd to me. I am trying to negotiate the contract before signing. Is the following true?

(MSN convo)
ME: I still don't understand why I have to sign the contract, thereby agreeing to its terms and conditions, before I can ask for it to be altered. that does not make sense to me

RECRUITER:You like the general contract and would like to take it, you sign the contract then we set up an appointment with you and employer
Employer has to like you too right?
Signing the contract shows your interest to work with them
They won't spend time interviewing with you
without the contract
and both of you like and nego[tiations] goes well
then you and your employer make the new contract with changes or details included
you send your documents so your employer can issue a visa for you
a week later, I will give you the number of visa, then you go to the Korean consulate to get the visa
and you go to Korea
But if the nego does not go well, then you can call it off
you still have your documents with you, contract is not valid
