Its coming. Mark my words. What do you think will happen when all of there different generation/builds of iPod Touch/iPhones get mixed in?

Instead of writing 1 App, developers have to now write 4 different versions to accommodate all of the various devices? Are developers jsut going to developer Apps for the newest generation device, leaving out all the consumers who didn't upgrade their hardware? How is Apple going to solve this problem? Already you have a lot of Apps that utilize the compass and camera that are useless for many.

They all run on the same software.

Your argument is like asking why write programs for PCs since they all have different hardware. Since they have the same software (Windows) it doesn't matter. As for the iPhone having a camera, if you have an iTouch, just don't buy the camera software just like you wouldn't buy software for a webcam if you didn't have one for your computer.

Most of the software for the Touch/iPhone is dross anyway. A few killer apps should emerge in the future. I will buy an iPhone when you can edit google docs on a real keyboard and screen. That would mean the iphone could do 99% of what I need a computer for.

pkang, that doesn't make sense to me. Jobs himself said recently that they are not adding the extra features/speed to keep the 8gb I-pod touch cheap. The goal is to provide the most inexpensive option for people, which in turn sells more at the app store.

So he says...

Same as all the million Firefox plugins and add-ons. When they upgrade the software, the developers upgrade theirs too. Welcome to technology?

So no one here sees any conflicts in the future?

So developers should just put out Apps to satisfy the lowest common denominator (iPod Touch 1st Gen) and just leave out everything else?

Lets face it, anything related to do with the Appstore gets headlines. Its only a matter of time before some great App is launched that won't work on Gen 1/Gen 2 iPod touch/iPhones and the blogosphere is flooded with complaints.

Plenty apps don't work on the 1st gen. I can't use augmented reality, gps, make phone calls etc. It's mostly a hardware thing. I can't play WoW on my PC from 1999.
