Is wireless internet readily accessible, like at bookstores or cafes? Or all they all password protected?

it is random. If you want wireless internet reliably and you're in seoul, look here:

While I've found wireless internet some places, it isn't a standard at every coffee shop/bookstore/etc
some places (like dunkin donuts) are tied in with a pay system called nespot.

other places have nothing at all.
I only go to one place regularly that has it, everyone else I go is dry so I picked up the device in those threads.

I walk around town with my I-pod touch, and can find a free wifi hotspot usually every 200 meters if near restaurants in popular areas. Sometimes more. There surely aren't enough to check wifi whenever you want, but you can find them if you walk around looking for them.

Some coffee shops have them. Many banks seem to have them (or businesses near banks, possibly). I can usually find at least one or more open hotspots in shopping malls, including Technomart and Yongsan. You can also often get lucky when walking by large apartment complexes.

Are those usable though? If so, you're far luckier than I am. I often see lots of random wireless signals, but most of them are not usable. I've walked down the street from apgujeong to seolleung and spotted tons, but 99% of them were either locked up or when I tried to join I got the fun little "unable to join" message. Most of the ones I could join would be so ridiculously slow it made using the map application impossible.

It can vary a lot depending on where you go. I seem to have luck finding enough around to check my e-mail while I'm out and about anyway. It's certainly not everywhere you want it, but it's around enough that I don't feel the need to pay for a service.
