I am a former employee of WinEducation aka EdUp and I have contacted a lawyer who is going to rid the Korean Educational System of them. Unknown to most who have worked for them but what they do and how they operate is completely illegal. I have my own issues with them that are going to be brought to the Labor Board. However this case is significant in the fact that it will rid the system of them. They not only operate illegally within the Public School System. But they charge more than they should for an after school English class. This money is then pocketed into the Principal and CEO's wallets. So, this is a moral and ethical issue that is going to court and I would like to see if any of you whom have worked for them would be willing to provide testimony on your experience with them. Again there is no money to be made from this case. This is to rid the system of them and try to turn around the Korean Educational System. There are many other company's that operate like this one, in Korea. However, I just so happened to have worked for this one. So, please if you have a story or an experience with them you may e-mail me at [email protected] I look forward to hearing from some people.

You won't get rid of them. If worst comes to worst they will just rename the company or transfer ownership of it to a relative. Also seeing as how you claim the principals of said public schools benefit by it, they'll also be supporting this company. Also the Education Ministry is not going to want to admit fault. Ultimately you're going to be taking on the whole education system in a country where you are not a citizen.

This is David vs Goliath...and someone's stolen your slingshot.

Thank you everyone for your replies but this post was not intended as an opinion piece. I understand that some might have their opinions on what is happening and how the outcome could be. However, the intentions of this was to get employees or former employees of this company to contact me if they wish to give their testimony to proceed in a case. So, please if you have an opinion, keep it to yourself. I want the employees or former employees to contact me with their story. Thank you again.

i have worked for this company. they are terrible. i know someone who was really screwed over by them as well.

there is so much more dirt to dish at this company, but its a waste of breath. the other commenter is correct, the best you can hope for is to annoy them and maybe they will change their name or give the company to a relative.

this company is not unique, there are hundreds of them in Seoul, probably thousands in the country.

i have worked for one decent company and then this one.

everyone should stay as far away as possible from these after school programs. they all work in the same way:

- they get a foreign teacher and a korean teacher and have them open a bank account in their own names
- the teachers, then give the bank book, card, and pin to the company
- the teachers agree to be paid a dividend of what is actually received in their name each month (e.g. if your pay is 2.5mw, more than 5mw is deposited in this account with your name on it)
- from this massive sum, you get paid, the company gets paid for doing nothing, and the principal of the school gets a kick-back for signing the foreign teachers visa, and in some cases a savvy principal will have the company kick money into another slush fund for the school for "equipment"

where does all this money come from???

well, the parents pay a maximum fee of something usually pretty low like 50,000 to 65,000 (thats what this company's program costs), then the government ever concerned about elitism in english education provides a 50% matching subsidy ...

so ...

you the teacher work killer hours, M-F, 12 - 5, five classes a day, and make a sweet 2.5mw. it sounds cool, but it isnt. you have 15 kids in each of the five classes.

5 x 15 = 75 kids and they pay 65,000 each = 4,875,000 and the government matches their tuition so the grand total is 9,750,000.

with that money the company pays you ...
- 2,500,000
= 7,250,000
your korean sidekick who usually works harder and longer hours ...
- 1,600,000 (occasionally one of these girls will rake in 1.8)
all that's left is PROFIT
= 5,650,000

the companies will argue that the rest of this cash goes to support you, provide training, manage the office, maintain the curriculum, and the program buys books for the kids.

but lets consider the points made by the company:

- supporting the teachers: stationery supplies? pure chump change here
- training: its rare, the decent company i worked for did it once, this one, never
- managing the office: companies like this one have a lot of people around to keep the foreign teachers from talking with each other and getting angry, and to micromanage a school principal when they call to complain that the foreign teacher is late or drunk: yes this is an actual expense, but in a company like this one, with more than twenty schools and 30+ teachers, and the money they take in ... this is barely a scratch on the profit or overhead
- maintaining the curriculum: what curriculum? the Let's Go Books your korean sidekick picked out before the level testing which you now want to replace? not.
- the kids dont have to buy their own books: total horse-hockey. the parents pay more on top for books, ordered in massive bulk orders by the company who rake a little more off to themselves.

one last thing ... this company and the others like, almost never pay taxes on this mass amount of cash because it is all being made in other peoples names, like your name.

they figure a foreign scapegoat is the pony to bet on, but if you are planning to stay a while you might want to really think about who will be left hold this sack when the government decides to crack down on these sham programs.
