To this day, I've never seen any japanese person getting harassed on the street of Seoul or anywhere in South Korea. And there are numerous of them. Not even one drunken ajoshi even bothered to annoy the japanese tourists in the busy night street of Gangnam. Not to mention, the younger generation of koreans are pretty damn cool with japanese people from my observation. There are protests here and there about the whole dokdo issue and ww2 related stuffs, but those protesters are all older generation from mid age 40 to higher.

IMO, most of japan-hate only exist in media and internet.

Not saying the anti-japan feeling is gone, but there seems to be less and less animosity towards japan as time goes by.

I've talked with many koreans regarding about ww2. Some are indifferent about japan, while some say it's time to forgive them but never forget.

I've mainly talked about this mostly with college students.

Maybe they are fearing a backlash if they start beating them up in the streets. Possibly it's not the best way to get sympathy.

This really is complete nonsense.

I believe they hate them from a collective and historical standpoint, not so much from person to person.

For example, it's the way we view the German Nazis. Most of us "hate" Nazis, and they are exclusively related to Germany's history. Many war games have us blowing away Nazis.

But we don't exactly get on their case about it or even mention it. It's just some latent belief we have that's lingering.

I noticed one of my 8th grade students writing hiragana on a worksheet I had handed out. I studied Japanese for a year in uni and a semester abroad, so I asked her about it.

Anyways, I asked why she was learning it and she got this disgusted look on her face and said "I hate Japan!" Her reason? "They kill Korea people."

Then again, I'm in the sticks, so I equate it to someone from where I'm from (Alabama) saying they don't like Obama for some stupid racist reason.

Why do you guys always have to make analogies?

Korea vs. Japan rivalry is so different from white/black racial tensions in the US, or from anything about Nazi Germany. These are awful comparisons.

Can't we just try to understand Korea/Japan relations for what they are, and not try to compare them to things that have happened in America and Europe?

This is a really good point.

But also I think it's sometimes necessary to compare what happened between Korea and Japan and in places like America and Europe.
