has anybody recieved the flight money from SMOE yet (1.3 million allowance)? i think this only really applies to the new intake. also has anbody recieved the 300,000 settlement bonus yet also.
my co teachers talking about some document that must come from smoe before they can pay it. sadly i need it on the first payday (as the contract and orientation said) as i need to pay key money. otherwise i find myself homeless.
share your stories from other schools if possible.
cheers |

I wouldn't have thought that you need to pay key money on a SMOE contract... surely your apartment should have been provided for you by your school??
If not your school should provide you with the key money to get a place.
My recruiter has advised me that I will receive flight allowance and the 300k once I pass my medical. I am not on the SMOE program but will be employed by a korea education government body.
I do know that you should not be homeless and if you are... then something has gone wrong.
Get in touch with the agency that recruited you. |

| i choose the housing allowance option. i wont be truely homeless. im living with a friend right now but his sister comes soon and i have signed a contract on my own place. homeless was a tad over the top. couch surfing is more realistic. really, its got nothing to do with the agenc though. i just really want peoples feedback from their situation. i am chasing up the money now |

| I am in Korea through GEPIK (as opposed to SMOE) but from what I hear it depends on the school. I apparently got a really good school that gave me my 300,000 allowance the day I arrived in Korea and my flight re-imbursement on my first day of starting. Some schools like to wait as long as possible though, I hear. |

Why didn't you just simply pick the housing instead of the allowance? Doesn't make sense at all since it's much more expensive to get your own housing.
You're supposed to have gotten your 300,000 allowance but as far as I know, nobody has gotten their flight reimbursement yet. My understanding is that you'll get it with your first paycheck. |

I think that choosing your own housing is a much better option, especially if you already know Korea. You know what you are getting and where you are going to live. Honestly I don't know why someone who already knows Korea would pick the housing. |

| i choose the housing as i now for the money have a really nice 2 bedroom place to myself with a great kitchen bathroom. 10 mins from my school in itaewon. the housing the school proivided for me (they wasnt informed i didnt require a house) was 20 mins away from the school and a very small studio with not much furniture. thats pretty much why i took the allowance. also then if i have problems in the future. they only own my visa, not my house and thus my life. |

| thank you wings. i posted that at the same time as you. i was already here. there was no chance i'd take th housing again. not only for the hold they have over you but also because if you look around. so much can be had if you have only a little key money. 2-3million can get a good place. 5 million gets somewhere really nice. though thats mainly in the itaewon area. |

| I received both (1.6 mil total) on Monday. The only paperwork your school needs is your bank account number, at least, for the settlement. Not sure if they need the medical check, too, but you should already have that from the SMOE. It's been available for pickup for the last two weeks. |
