Yesterday I went to New York Columbia Dentist in Itaewon. They are a new company and are offering a specil on teeth cleaning.

I was pleasantly surprised by the politness of the staff, however the dentist was a real ass. He told me that I had all of these problems with my teeth that would require TONES of money and surgical procedures. I didn't have a problem with what he told me because I assumed he was trying to make serious money from me, it was how he told me....he was so incensitive and only talked about money.

To be honest I started to cry because I couldn't figure out how my teeth got to be so bad, and he started calling me a liar and really putting me down and laughing at me.

I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience, and I urge everyone to stay the hell away from that man, he is a complete ass.

Why didn't you walk out? A dentist check up costs like three bucks. Get a second opinion.

I have a heard similar stories. A dentist wanted to change a gold tooth into a porcelain tooth. Afterwards he said there was no need to do it but that it looked better this way, even though he first gave the impression that it was important. At the same time the patient had several cavities which got postponed because they were much cheaper treatments.

Koreans brush their teeth 3 times more often than I and they still have much worse teeth. I'm starting to believe that it's just the dentist making them believe they've got bad teeth even if there is nothing wrong with them.

The first time I went to a dentist in Korea, he said I had 8(!) cavities. I've never had a cavity in my life. I went back to the same clinic but a different dentist on the day before Chuseok started, last year (which reminds me, I better go get a check up), and he said I had none. He was obviously trying to rush the patients through, so he could get away for his long weekend. So I pressed him and he changed his story to "three shallow cavities, come back in three months." friend of mine was teaching in ilsan last year. She went to a dentist for an issue with her wisdom teeth. the guy tried removing them but managed to drill a bit too far, got into her jaw somehow.... and then somehow the area got infected....

I'm going to be very sceptical of korean dentists.

This is just a good reminder to floss twice a day and brush after every meal religiously in Korea.

Most of them are quite good, but some are profiteering charlattans. I've had a similar trick tried on me. The dentist said i needed a replacement filling because the old one was causing the gum to bleed.(Since when? not to my knowledge).

He then deliberately jagged my gum with his little implement "look, its bleeding!".

I went to the sentist 2 days ago for teeth cleaning (scaling). I kept putting my hand up for him to let me spit out, even tapping the nurse and pointing and he ignored me. Got to rinse 3 times in 15 minutes, effing jerk. Blood and water were flying up in the air like a fountain. I just felt like he was rushing everything through . He was so rough I bled quite a lot too. Then he says I need 3 wisdom teeth out. F-off, you're not going anywhere near me again. He also asked if I'd already had 3 wisdom tooth out-well, you're the bloody dentist, can't you tell???

Dentist was recommended by wife who said the dentist was "one of only 5 the Seoul Professor would let work on him". Koreans have a story for every occasion.

I only went to one dentist here for a wisdom tooth and he was alright. I was skeptical at first when he disdainly proclaimed that American doctors are "too careful" (wouldn't you wanna be careful?). But he got the tooth out quick and my experience seemed similar to how Americans get their wisdom tooth out according to my friends' stories.

Overall though, I would say doctors in Korea are hacks including even some of the established ones in bigger hospitals. As opposed to in the US where I generally trust doctors of established hospitals and only mistrust the local clinics.

I know this is not a real solution to the problem, but I only use my dentist in Thailand (meaning once a year, but he fixed up my teeth real good last time and in any case that's about 20 times more often than I want to see a dentist). After reading several reports about Korean dentists I really don't feel any urge to try it myself. On the other hand, most of my friends here (non-ET) have had no bad experiences. Rolling Eyes

By and large.. korean dentists do a good job. What bothers me though is that they take too long to do it. you're maybe talking 8 consecutive apointments for treating a cavity then applying a gold cap.
Not all of us have the time to keep running back across town for the next stage of treatment.
