I was curious to hear you say that an SSD drive is too slow for XP...????.....the idea that new-fangled SSD drives can't do what redular HDD's could do 9 years ago seemed strange...
So I looked up the Acer Aspire One.....
SSD disks
The A110 model ships with an 8 GB or 16 GB solid-state drive (SSD). Early 8 GB models come with the Intel Z-P230, model SSDPAMM0008G1. This SSD has been criticized for its slow read and write speed. Intel lists the drive's maximum speeds as 38 MB/s read and 10 MB/s write.[22] Later models come with the slightly faster Samsung P-SSD 1800.
[edit]Hard disks
The HDD is a regular 2.5-in 5400 rpm SATA drive with 80, 120 or 160 GB. A number of different drives have been reported so far: Seagate ST980811AS and ST9120817AS[23], Western Digital WD1200BEVS[24], WD1600BEVT, Hitachi HTS543212L9A300[25], Hitachi HTS543216L9SA00, and Toshiba MK1652GSX.
It seems that the 8GB (waay too small!!) SSD drive was indeed too slow.
I'm amazed that Acer would put a teensy-weensy 8GB SSD into a largish netbook.....that was too slow for even XP!!! That's really weird. Why would anyone even buy a netbook with 8GB of storage?? Any MP3 player over 150,000 won has more than 8GB SSD!!!
Is it under warranty?
I'd just bring it to the Acer A/S center, which, no doubt is somewhere in Yongsan. Ask a Korean friend to to a quick internet search and print a map for you.
Get a regular 160GB 2.5'' HDD fitted in there.
You could risk giving it to some local guys in Bucheon, but they might make a mess of it, or they might just send it to the Acer A/S center and charge you a commission on top of the A/S center fee. |

Let me clarify...
I had used the 8 gig drive with xp that someone put on for me for about 6 months and although it was slow it was still usuable just not to my liking.
Recently I've gotten a message that I need to activate windows for some reason, so I'm thinking that now is a good time to swap it out and put in a normal HD and DL a copy of windows ISO and reinstall.
I don't have a problem with the drive but find it alittle to slow and small for my liking.
I bought my netbook right when the Acer came out but checked my serial number on the net and I think I have faster samsung p-ssd drive but still get annoyed with the "Write speed" "read speed" seems fine.
Right now I'm using a work around to get around the windows activation annoyance but that still limits my functions. Thought I'd bit the bullet and make my netbook nice and proper.
My only problem is trying to figure if I can fit a 2.5 HD drive in there or do I have to go with a 1.8 HD from a i-pod or something. I've read some conflicting articles. I've seen 2.5 drives up to 500gig for 120$ so I would want to go with that.
I wasn't aware that Acer was even sold in Korea, I might go that option to know it is done right. A user has offered to help me out but I have yet to e-mail him back been alittle busy.
I need alittle time to save some sheckels to buy a new drive first.
I would be willing to trade the 8 gig drive in there to anyone willing to do the install and put a copy of xp on the new drive.
I think I need new zif or zip cables or something or other also.
I would have to format the ssd drive tho...... |
