|
|
So new ipods are announced, dissapointed with the lack of upgrades on the touch (could they not of shoehorned all the stuff from the nano into that big touch case?), went to the apple store in hongdae today (in the slim hope of a miracle) and the dude thought i was nuts asking for a 64gig touch. (like thay didnt exist, crazy waykook)
So, who knows when and where the boat will first come? for me to get my hands on one, i have been (im)patiently waiting for the storage to get large enough to justify having one and they have, i want one!
Travel is not much of an issue, would order online from apple but have no credit card (its why im in korea) plus i leave in 3 weeks for the uk (would like it for loooong flight) so wouldnt want to risk a delay in shipping.
So if anyone has an idea, post away |

Not sure how you can get the new 64gb model within 3 weeks.
The Apple online store is listing that model to be available in Korea in 3-5 weeks.
Maybe someone else has an idea. |

What's up with the price difference?
The apple site lists a 64g touch for 599,000 won vs $399. Is there a trade tariff on electronics, or is Apple just raking it in? |

Welcome to electronics shopping in Korea!!
Korea has a protectionist market. They love exporting, but hate importing. Hence the import duties.
Then add the fact that Korean retailers know that Koreans see imported stuff (by famous companies) as exotic and desirable (I know, even in 2009. The rest of the world has enjoyed the global marketplace for at least 20-30 years. Not here though). So the retailers jack up the price more than usual.
Then, add to the above, the fact that you're buying an Apple product! Which are always overpriced in the first place.
That's a triple whammy right there.
And that's why I'll probably never buy an Apple product in Korea.
(I might consider an iTouch if I was shopping outside Korea and it was on sale. They are excellent PMP's). |

Apple Korea is not cheating you on the prices. In fact, from what I can tell, Apple has calculated the prices at the current exchange rate of 1250 won per dollar.
First, everyone here needs to remember that the iPod Touch IS NOT $199, $299, or $399 in the US. That is the pre-tax price. Anyone who buys an iPod Touch is going to pay an average of 8 percent sales tax on it.
So, let's make a fair comparison. If you go to Apple Korea, the prices shown there INCLUDE the sales tax (10% VAT). This is the same 10% that is included in the price you see on the menu at McDonalds, on the book you buy at Kyobo, and so on. All Korean prices have this 10 percent already added into the price. Don't believe me, go to the Korean Apple Store and add an iPod Touch to your cart. It will show the tax that is already included in the price.
So, if you are going to compare prices, you need to compare the same prices (pre-tax prices). Here it is:
Korea Apple Store Pre Tax Prices For iPod Touch:
64GB: 562,727 won
32GB: 417,273 won
8GB: 280,091 won
US Apple Store Pre Tax Prices For iPod Touch:
64GB: $399
32GB: $299
8GB: $199
*****Also, let's not forget that electronics imported into Korea have a 14 percent duty placed on their pre-tax US dollar value.
For example, a 64GB iPod Touch has a $399 USD value. At the current exchange rate, that is about 494,000 won. Add 14 percent (about 69,000 won) to that pre-tax price and you get a price of about 563,000 won. Now add the 10 percent VAT to that price (VAT does not include the duty when calculating it, so it would be 494,000 x 10 percent). This would add about 49,000 won to the total, which brings the price to 612,000 won (only 7,000 won difference from the Apple Store's listed price, since the exchange rate fluctuates each day).
Go ahead, run the numbers for each. You'll find that the price here in Korea includes the 10 percent sales tax and the 14 percent import duty. If you buy an iPod Touch in the US, you'll still pay the sales tax but you'll avoid the 14 percent duty.
So, in all fairness, the iPod Touch is only about 15 percent more expensive here than it is in the US, and it is all because of TAXES, not because of the exchange rate.
Don't blame Apple for these prices. Apple does not set Korean taxes and duties. If you are irked about the prices, put the blame where it belongs: The tax happy Korea government! |
