I've been to Japan at least 10 times, I love riding their trains. Even though they've had 12 years of economic problems, they still continue to pump out new models. Best rail system I've ever seen. There might be another country out there that outdoes the Japanese in terms of train/rail, but the Japanese are masters of rail.
Here's a video of a new train coming out soon.

Ah, Japanese trains. Something about 'em fills me with nostalgia. I haven't lived in Japan now for almost 5 years and I used to ride trains regularly. Something about the clackety clack of the train wheels (not the shinks of course) was soporific in the best of ways. And the level of service. World class. |

Probably costs a fortune to ride those trains. |

One thing I love about Japanese subway trains is when you're in the very first car, you can see through the big picture window behind the driver out at the track ahead of you. I love to stand there and watch where we're going - it's a great idea - obviously better when the subway is above ground! |

Trains are fun everywhere.
Vietnamese trains are sparse and dirty, but the scenery is nice and they're cheap.
Malaysian trains are fairly luxurious, with private sinks and decent bunk beds.
Canadian trains have giant seats and a second floor with humongous windows that give you a full view of the skinny bridge you're riding through a mountain on!

Shinkansen is very pricy, thus Korail is much more desirable. The fastest train is probably in China now? But I heard riding a really fast train hurt your ears.
Not all trains are enjoyable, though.
For example, the Indian pack train
and trains in North Korea which take years from Pyongyang to the countryside. |

Yo, Japan, I'm really happy for you, and I'm going let you finish, but Thomas the Tank Engine was one of the best trains of all time! Of all time! |

I was really impressed with the trains in France. Big fast double-deckers. |

Chinese trains were annoying as hell...not enjoyable....boring at best...violent at worst...our conductor had to keep stopping just to throw people out for fighting... |

In China the train from Beijing to Lhasa is a treat but take your own food. As for Japanese trains, they are the best. There is something about that Nozomi pulling into the station bang on time then whisking you away to your destination at high speed. |

Japan has cool trains, but the routes are very hard to figure out. Even my Japanese friends constantly didnt know what train we needed to be catching. |
