|
|
| I'm looking into a job that would have me living and teaching in Gyeonggi-do. The recruiter has asked me for a list of places in Gyeonggi-do that I would want to be placed in. My main concern is being as close to Seoul as possible, and general ease of getting to Seoul. From what I can tell from maps I've been looking at, Guri seems like the closest I can get while still being in Gyeonggi-do. Is this accurate? If you had to pick the top 3 places in Gyeonggi-do while trying to be as close to Seoul as possible, what would your choices be? Any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much. |

seeing as gyeonggi-do surrounds seoul, a lot of places are equally near seoul.
depends on what part of seoul you want to be near. |

| Tell them Bundang (pronounced boon-DONG). I've lived here for 2 weeks so far. First time in Korea. I like this place a lot. |

| Anyang is decent. Ridiculous amount of foreign teachers there too. Can't imagine a higher concentration anywhere in Gyeonggi. |

| But really, all the first-tier Seoul suburbs are going to be a lot of the same. |

Bundang to Itaewon (popular place in Seoul):
Walking from my apartment to subway station - less than 5 minutes
Waiting for train - 1-10 minutes
Riding to first stop - 15-20 minutes
First stop to second stop - 30 minutes
Second stop to third stop - 5-10 minutes
I can get to Itaewon in 1 hr 30 min by subway.
Took the bus from Itaewon to Bundang once. Took 30-45 minutes. But I didn't know which stop to get off at, so I got off at a random one, found the subway, took that to my part of Bundang. Ended up taking as long as the subway would have took to begin with. |

| Like someone else said, everything is equally close/far from seoul. I would say your best bet is to find something along the train line, or make sure there are express buses nearby. I live in Osan/Suwon area and I can catch the train to Seoul and be there in 29 minutes. Just because there is a subway line does not mean it is accessible. I.E., Imjingang station to Seoul Station takes 1 hour and the trains only leave 1 per hour. Not the most accessible place. |

Holy. The bus system is not THAT difficult. I use it every day and it's a huge timesaver compared to taking the subway everywhere. The subway from Itaewon to Gangnam for example takes about 50 min, but the bus can make it in around 25.
They have recently changed a ton of routes and not updated it but http://bus.congnamul.com/SeoulRouteWebApp/view_english/map.jsp is still my favourite Korean website. (Use internet explorer.) I can only read Korean, but that is enough to get around with the buses very easily. You need Korean to read most of the maps, but they also say all the stops in English. |

The bus from Ilsan to Hongdae takes about 30-45 min. From Hongdae, a taxi to my place (near Daewha) takes about 20 min. and costs 23,000 won.
It takes exactly 1 hour to get to Seoul Station by bus. |

It shouldn't take nearly that long. Take one of the red buses that starts with a 9. Get off at the first stop across the river. From that point on the right side of the road, walk north for maybe 50 meters to another bus stop and get on the 110-A. That'll turn west and go for 4-5 minutes, and you're in Itaewon. Total of 45 minutes on a decent day. To get home, take the 110-B back to the same stop and get on a red 9 bus back to Bundang. |

Make it the second stop after the river, and you don't even have to walk. Unfortunately the 110 comes at very odd intervals - I have waited more than 30 minutes on a rainy evening once - and if you can see it leave the bus stop just before you get there, better hop in a taxi.
I work in Seongnam near Sunae station (live in Daechi) and my normal Itaewon routine takes me at least 90 minutes, usually closer to 2 hours (subway to Hanti station, then the 420 bus over the river and finishing with 110 or taxi) so the tip with the 9xxx buses sounds good to me. Will try that. The reason why I switch to bus after the subway: less transfers and a better view, plus you get to ride in the bus lane for most of the congested roads.
Talking about crossing the river, I wonder what idiot had the idea to insert a stop on the bridge(!) between Sinsa and Hannam Ogeori stops... the bus has to pull over hard across the merging on/off ramp, and usually blocks two lanes just to be able to pull out of that stop. Since they made it I have never, ever seen anyone get on my bus there (or off). OINK. |

Could be the second stop, although with the 9xxx bus that I take, I'm pretty sure it's the first. In any case, pianowill, just get off when you see the big walking bridge across the road. That's where the 110 will stop.
Orosee, I'd definitely suggest the 9xxx buses. No stops at all after leaving Seohyeon Station (not on the bridge like your 420 bus). I think that's probably why the 110 stop is my first stop and your second. Worth a shot to take the subway to Seohyeon, 9xxx bus across the river, then the 110. Let me know how it works out. |
