Hi. So it looks like I might well be working for CEPIK (not GEPK or EPIK) - it's in Cheungchunnamdo...
Anyone ever done it? How was it?
I've done EPIK and GEPIK beofre, so I'd imagine it's not too much different, though I notice there's nothing about visa run airfare reinbursement or severeance pay in the contract but there's a 1.3 mil loan that's waived if you stay more than 6 months, the salary is 2.5 plus 100 rural allowance and there's a 2mil re-sign bonus.

It's basically the same as other places. Maybe a little better, it 's probably in the top 3 provinces based on FT conditions. It's also one of the highest paing provinces. One thing to consider is that it's rural - a major downside to some.
The 1.3 million is your travel allowance when you get hired, but you recieve it after you start working. I've heard that there is a clause in the contract that pays teachers hired in korea only 500 000. Thats BS, because if youre working in korea, you'll probably visit home or travel between contracts. So, you'll have the same expense as someone who buys a one to korea and receives the 1.3mil since your previous employer would likely only pay for you to get home. I dont know how true that is, but I would argue the case for 1.3 mil at the hiring meeting if you are in korea now.
There's also the 300 000 settlement allowance that should also be paid when you start working. Its meant to purchase things you'll need to get set-up in your new apartment - other than the furnishings, which should already be there. If you choose to find your own housing, you still get the settlement allowance, but you will also receive 400 000 per month in lieu of free housing. You won't receive any key deposit money from the school if you choose the second option.
You get another 1.3 mil travel allowance when you complete the contract, but dont renew. If you re-sign for a second year, you get 2.0 mil travel allowance that is received when you return to start the second contract period.
I spent a year there and it was a great experience with some good OT income and lots of extra vacation time. Of course, your experience may differ as conditions are not consistent from school to school within any province. |
