Anyone know anybody whos still managed to get a job with one? Im missing my left hand, from birth, and I know the korean schools are big on looks and what not, so I'm guessing my chances of scoring a job will be a lot lower? I'd really love to do it! half the time people don't even notice, and it doesnt stop me doing anything. So anyone got any advice?? |

Well, there were two players in Major League Baseball who only had one arm. One outfielder and one pitcher. Anyway, Korea is not as forgiving when birth defect is concerned. You will hear a lot of talk-behind-your-back. There are quite a bit of beliefs in superstitions. Looks do matter, but not enough for an out-right rejection as a teacher. If you ain't a Maori, I'd say you'd have a better chance of getting a job than me. |

If they don't ask, don't tell.
I can't remember whether you have to state any disability in PS app forms or not.
Korea can be forgiving once you've got the job. I am not technically allowed to teach because my eye sight is bad. It's not only not up to Korean teacher standard, more like blind as a bat. But there's always that fudge factor.

yea I'd be tempted to do that, but probably too scared to actually go through with it incase theyd fire me and i end up stranded. I'll just try to make myself look like the best teacher ever in my photo! |

Yes, there are foreign teachers here in Korea with obvious physical disabilities so it is possible.
At my work place there is a foreigner with a very obvious physical 'difference'. But, is considered one of the best employees.
Koreans can often be focused on the external a bit too much.
I would still apply if I were you.
Good luck. |

I know someone who was fired after two weeks for a physical disability. It is easier to hide than a missing hand though, so the next job was simply never told about it and things were fine. They have to have figured it out because easier to hide doesn't mean completely not noticeable, but they can pretend they don't know, so everything is a-okay.
If you do decide to give Korea a try, I'd be really interested in hearing about it. Not sure I'd recommend lying about it because that's not something that will go unnoticed. |

you'd actually be surprised how often people dont notice! i dont wear tshirts or anything, and dont have a prosthetic hand/hook so it doesnt surprise me people dont notice. If i was standing in front of a class people would be able to tell quite quickly though i guess. Ok well i've decided i wont lie about it haha. Ill just |

You don't have a visual disability (at least you don't mention it), you have a visible disability. Since you have lived with this since birth I would have thought you'd have known this by now..
A visual disability would mean you wear glasses or lost an eye or something along those lines. Actually this makes me think your entire post is made up. I can't believe someone with a visible disability could have got this far through life calling it a 'visual disability' without a teacher or someone correcting them. |

I was thinking the same thing. Glad to see someone put it down coherently. |

Do let us know if a job pans out, and what people's reactions are though. Am very curious what works for people in your situation.
I knew a guy with an arm that was smaller than the other, and he was working at a hagwon. Nice guy, genuine, but of course his fiancee's parents had a hard time. |
