Article here.

Quote:
Protesters who attended Saturdays Tea Party rally in Washington found a new reason to be upset: Apparently they are unhappy with the level of service provided by the subway system.

Rep. Kevin Brady called for a government investigation into whether the government-run subway system adequately prepared for this weekends rally to protest government spending and government services.

Seriously.

The Texas Republican on Wednesday released a letter he sent to Washingtons Metro system complaining that the taxpayer-funded subway system was unable to properly transport protesters to the rally to protest government spending and expansion.

These individuals came all the way from Southeast Texas to protest the excessive spending and growing government intrusion by the 111th Congress and the new Obama administration, Brady wrote. These participants, whose tax dollars were used to create and maintain this public transit system, were frustrated and disappointed that our nations capital did not make a great effort to simply provide a basic level of transit for them.

A spokesman for Brady says that there werent enough cars and there werent enough trains. Brady tweeted as much from the Saturday march. METRO did not prepare for Tea Party March! More stories. People couldnt get on, missed start of march. I will demand answers from Metro, he wrote on Twitter.

Brady says in his letter to Metro that overcrowding forced an 80-year-old woman and elderly veterans in wheelchairs to pay for cabs. He concludes that it appears that Metro added no additional capacity to its regular weekend schedule.

Does Texas even have a subway or a monorail? No, I didn't think so. Goddamn hypocritical idiots!

P.S.: I was originally born in Texas and have nothing against Texans with the exception of these idiots.

He would have a point if he could prove that there was less service offered to them than other protest groups.

I think Fox is highlighting the story because you have an anti-government spending politician complaining that there isn't enough government service spending.

Yes it is ironic. Why didn't the organizers (Beck&Co.) provide bus service from the Park and Ride spots out in the 'burbs. There are plenty of them. Guess they didn't think this through.

What a douche bag. I was on the Orange Line the day of the Tea Baggers convention. It ran fine, NO PROBLEMS. There was a train every 5-10 minutes, which is average on a Saturday. Basically these people are a bunch of goddamn hicks who probably have never before had the crowded subway experience (and it still wasn't nearly as crowded as some of my Seoul subway experiences).

And that's exactly what was in my head Saturday. Ok, so you people are for less gov't spending but riding something that wouldn't be running w/out tax money? Are you freaking kidding me??

It's better press to do no such thing, then use any inconvenience anyone suffers -- no matter how trivial -- as proof that many people who wanted to come couldn't. That way, you can make claims about the number of people involved totally regardless of the actual number of people involved.

I love the DC Metro, never have had any problems.

That's not necessarily true.

so Pluto, you think private financing would be able to be raised to pay for a subway system? and could charge the prices Metro does and be profitable? Is there any example of a privately run subway?

Yes. New York City's MTA and the Chicago el didn't become public utilities until the late forties. New York's public transit companies started in 1869. Mass transit must compete with roads and those who would rather walk. Mass transit could certainly be a profitable venture if left to the market. It would cost less than driving too lest the MTA or CTA go out of business.

Right. But roads are free (so basically there is a public subsidy to use cars). And the MTA became public because it couldn't be sustained as a private business.

Yeah, that is what they say. Roads are heavily subsidized which gives an unfair advantage to mass transit. Mass transit in my town is run about as well as the post office, I feel. A couple of the stops near my apt. have been finished, but it took almost 8 years for them to complete start to finish. They're nice stations though.

So the ones that did think it thru stayed home? Is that their excuse for lower numbskulls... er, numbers?

Personally, I don't like getting caught in those crowds wondering where I'm going to use the next restroom. At least hanging out around a Metro stop would be helpful in that respect. Wink
