I can get all the new U.S. TV in 720p within minutes. New HD Movies...whatchya talkin' about....7-9MB/s. I guess me being in Korea, I'm "geographically close" to EVERYONE!! Razz

Usegroups...haven't used them, but they seem like they're for chumps. Why pay for something just as fast (or as fast as need be if you don't want to debate exact speeds) that's free and less hassle IMHO.

Download is no problem. It is the uploading that is the problem. If people live far away from you and there is a closer seed, they prefer that one and your upload sits there doing nothing. Your ratio ends up taking a pounding which can be death on a private tracker.

I accidentally left my computer on while I was at work. I had the Sopranos torrent from Demonoid and came back to see I'd uploaded over 100 Gigs. Ratio's no problem for me now...

Only thing I'd love to do is stream American news.

Demonoid isn't a private tracker, its semi-private.
Their torrents are open to the public if you grab them off another site like BTJunkie, and the ratio on demonoid is meaningless.

Really? Where did you hear that? I have excellent ratios on the trackers I belong to. However, I have had difficulties with uploads at times...but I think there is more to it than location. Not trying to be a bonehead, but do you have reference? I'd like to look into this issue some more.

On one of my private trackers. I asked about it when I was trying to figure out why there were leechers but my upload was just sitting there. I absolutely confirmed it when I uploaded a torrent to the site.
I was uploading a movie like.. 50 leechers. As long as I was the only seed, my upload was maxed, as soon as this big gun in the US hit 100% my upload dropped to zero, within about 5 minutes. Hours later my final ratio on the torrent was like 1.02 or something. there were still 45 leeachers, but my speed was no longer interesting to them because of the guy who was closer. It happens on a lot of torrents. They've started cracking down on these guys with big pipes who end up going to like 30.0 ratio on some films and absolutely screwing a lot of people, but it still happens all the time.

People's connections might be maxed not just from this torrent, but other torrents, in that case they're going to request from the closer seed, which if you're the only user in Korea, means you get left out unless all the other seeds are maxed.

I'm sure there must be something written into the protocol that relies on latency. The lower the latency with other clients the less likely loss is to occur. Hence having a large pipe 9000km doesn't help. Now I know BT uses hash checks to correct corrupt segments, but that stills means you need to re-download the piece. Anyway I don't know the reason exactly, but I also suffer the same fate on what.cd

Just browsing the newsgroups, there seems to be an awful lot of spam/trojans/fakes.

How do you tell the legitimate stuff from bad?

Also, is it worth the extra money for the SSL? If you are downloading directly from the server, why the need for SSL connection?

Yup. Its mentioned on the forum somewhere. Since the torrents are available publicly, there is no way for them to properly measure the ratio.

The only thing membership gets you is access to the torrent list, but there are sites that scrape demonoid already.

I seed 24/7 anyway. It's the only way to keep my ratio up on torrentleech. I dread the day when I have to go back home to data caps.

I'm confused 'cause I too have a 100mb connection and it's really... err, slow. I think it's my router? It's a Korean-brand N router and I'm thinking, like everything, it's simply incompatible with my Mac - or something along those lines.

The problem with private trackers is that they are private. You got a Bitmetv or TVTorrents invite you wanna send my way?

Ditto, I could use an invite.
