I remember reading an article in the Korea Times in late 2004 or early 2005 about the decline of record stores in Korea. If I remember correctly, at that time there were something like 50 record shops in the country. I figured it was a misprint and they meant 500, but I guess it was actually right haha.
Anyway I've not bought an album for about 6 years or so.. and I think I only know one Korean person who's bought a CD from a record shop in the time I've been here haha.
The US is kind of old fashioned in that it has the mix of behind-the-times technology and old-fashioned morals so they still manage to sell a few albums in N. America, but the rest of the world pretty much quit buying them a few years ago.
Seo Tae-ji is cool though. He brought hiphop AND Nu-metal to Korea haha. I think he has a museum out in Jamshil or somewhere to honour him. |

There are very few record shops now. Kyobo Munko, The place in Co-Ex...that's all I've seen so far.
On the one hand people don't have stereos so no CDs. On the other, for those who can't stand the compressed sound of Mp3s the traditional options remain eg High-End gear (at Youngsan, though no idea how they are with servicing the equipment or when things go wrong) and even Gangnam Kyobo Munko has a couple of boxes of vinyl. |

| I remember Seo Taiji from 10 years ago and it`s good to see them still around....... unlike most K-bands that arrive on the scene, popular for a year or 2 then disappear without a trace never to be heard from again. |

People don't buy albums anymore. Seotaji is one of the few Korean artists who actually release ALBUMS. Not 2-3 single's on a CD.
Koreans don't buy CD's, but they spend a LOT of money on buying ring tones, color rings, melon subscrtiption, etc... |

| If you are looking for a complete Album from a Korean group give Rollercoaster a try. They are an acid jazz/funk/lounge band. An actual band. Like, a real band. All of their albums are pretty good, with their 3rd one being one of the great Korean albums- press play, leave stereo alone. They were cool enough to release their 3rd album on vinyl too as a collector's item. |

Yeah this is one of the things that bothers me about Korean artists. They sell these albums with only a few songs on it, charge people the same price as a full length album then are surprised when sales are so low. |

One of my friends was just talking about them. I was considering giving them a listen at one point. |

I don't know about here, but in NZ being "#1" is determined by radio playtime, not sales.
Is there a programme on TV which has Korean music other than the 5-6 songs on saturated Tv station to station rotation? |
