Does anyone know if there are any crossfit gyms or instructors in Seoul? I know the army guys run one in the Yongsan base but id imagine thats just for US military and their families.

Anything out there for the rest of us?

There was a guy at my gym I used to train with that said he was going to do it over the summer. Didn't see him much after that though. Sure you can't just do it on your own? As I understand it, it's just a serious of exercises and routines. I don't think it requires special weight or machines or anything. I could be wrong though.

You can do it on your own but its more fun as part of a gym..and the gyms have the specific equipment to hand. I dont have barbells and stuff at my apartment and im not sure a normal gym would be too happy to have me doing such vigorous stuff in their nice spaces Embarassed

This would be awesome! I've been doing Mark Rippetoe's starting strength program since May and have learned about cross fit while doing so

Cross fit blows away 90% of what most of the chodes are doing in the gym nowadays.

I remember one of the fitness posts on this site a guy talked about a gym that was totally different from other Korean gyms set up with huge tires, sledge hammers, box jumps, power racks, etc (not necessarily crossfit) but it sounded pretty cool

ps. any of you guys seen the cross fit movie that just came out called 'every second counts' pretty bad ass I saw it last week

You should be able to do it at most gyms around Seoul. I try to follow the crossfit WOD as much as possible. It has not been a problem.

You guys can do what you want with your bodies, but I wouldn't suggest crossfit unless you're a pro athlete or someone who needs their body to be in unreal shape to make a living.

There is not a lot of science to back it up, and fact is, if you do it wrong, you can die from it. People have died because they didn't do it exactly as the program calls. This is not something even I, rather experienced fitness freak and weight lifter, would do on my own without a certified crossfit trainer.

You're essentially combining your cardio and weight training together. In high intensity weight lifting regimens. Besides the obvious issues with possible bone or muscle displacement, you're also putting your heart through a major amount of stress. It is possible to overload it and cause it to go into shock. Crossfit was made for pro soccer players, NBA players, NFL guys, and Olympic athletes. Any average gym jock runs the risk of seriously hurting themselves or others around them.

There's nothing wrong with a proper weight lifting routine and a solid cardio routine. HIIT and Tabata are fine ways to build up speed, power, and weight loss. Listing weights shouldn't be about extreme speeds and intensity. Instead, it should be slow, controlled movements with proper form and range of motion. You simple can't do that, and get your muscles to proper benefit, from a program like crossfit.

Read the critiques about it online. Listen to the doctors that say you shouldn't do it. Then make that decision on your own.

I'm not going to say "don't do it." I believe it's your body and your choice. It's just something I wouldn't do and I'm probably in better shape that most people on here.

The passion that crossfit has going for it seems to be "crossing" the line into a cult. A cult for obsessive compulsive ex-athletes who body worship, but in a different way than meatheads. Crossfit does encourage "scaling" for those who can't do the WODs as they stand, but I've seen many, many crossfit videos, and there is a tendency to push people to failure which can be highly dangerous. So you'd better be superfit already or go to a certified crossfit gym where someone can guide you.

Otherwise, what you are really doing is a variation of Turbulence Training, which I like a lot better as it incorporates supersets without rest and HIIT immediately after the strength training workout.

However, love the way crossfit works gymnastics exercises into the WODs. That is the way to go.

Bumping this thread. Any new info on crossfit boxes in Seoul or any other city in Korea for that matter? I do crossfit now and if I move to S Korea I would like to keep doing it if possible. Thanks.

I saw a cross fit gym in Gangnam one day while riding the bus. I cant recall exactly where it is but there was a big sign that said "Cross fit" with a picture of a kettle ball. It looked legit from the street.

Oh Hai, been doing Crossfit or Crossfit-like stuff since I was 14. Not a pro athlete. Been doing it along with probably hundreds of thousands of people in the US who are into it now, including senior citizens who have made massive progress with their bodies.

I like how your first post in this thread is like, "hai guyz what are crossfits?" and the second one is advice to not touch it.

Damn! This is the place I was trying to remember as I was reading this thread. I came across it when I was looking for kettlebells. Looks interesting, unfortunately for me, I live in the boonies--hours out of Seoul. I'd love to be able to go to this place a few times a week! There are a couple other places like it, but not many in Seoul at this time.

I'm basing this on my one experience and research / anecdotal testimony of friends. I went to a gym once at the town I went to school in, I thought it was fantastic, but in the end I couldn't afford it (it was like, $150 a month, wtf? I'm like a, eat beans and rice, go out for drinks once a month student, no way I can pay that), which I was super bummed about. I'm looking at picking it up again here in Prague (50 bucks a month whaaat, and to continue in Korea if I can swing it).

I'm not an expert on crossfit, but the gym I tried it at I (24) was the youngest person there by about 8 years, and a number of people were over 50. There was one super fit guy (police officer I think) but everyone else was just a normal person. (in my home town it's really big with firefighters and to a lesser extent police) The emphasis by far in the workouts was on form and safety first, and secondly everyone completing the workouts at whatever pace they could manage. I'm not ashamed to point out also that while I considered myself in reasonably good shape, I finished like 10 minutes after the next slowest person, who was about 30 years older than me

What it comes down to is qualified, helpful supervision. Anyone taking it up cold needs to be taught all the exercises they're going to encounter, by someone who knows what they're talking about, and they need to be monitored at first to make sure they're doing it right and aren't going to hurt themselves. Oh, and reasonable weights per individual needs / ability. Obviously not everyone is a high-level athlete, and obviously not everyone is going to be able to do a workout like a high-level athlete would. But if you ease into it and have someone keeping an eye on you, I don't see any reason besides serious medical conditions that crossfit shouldn't be accessible to practically anyone.
