Nuclear power station gets final warning
LIQUID WASTE WAS DISCHARGED INTO FIRTH OF CLYDE WITHOUT BEING TESTED
Published: 21/09/2009
A SCOTTISH nuclear power station has been issued with a final warning after radio- active waste leaked into the sea, it emerged yesterday. Hundreds of gallons of low-level waste was discharged from Hunterston B into the Firth of Clyde on May 15. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency said it did not cause an environmental issue.
However, the agency issued the Ayrshire power station with a final warning letter because procedures had not been followed. A Sunday newspaper printed extracts from the letter sent by radioactive substances specialist Keith Hammond on July 8. He wrote: Any further contravention of the legislation is likely to result in enforcement action being taken against you.
WWF Scotland spokesman Lang Banks said: Once again the nuclear industry has shown itself to be totally inept when it comes to public and environmental safety.
British Energy said the incident happened while a routine maintenance operation was being carried out to leak test a pipe on the authorised discharge route from the low-level waste facility. About 570 gallons of waste was discharged without being sampled beforehand for effluent quality as required.

What a scholar.

That is reminiscent of EPA Head Christie Todd Whitman saying on Sept. 18, 2001 that the air at ground zero was "safe to breathe."
We all know how that worked out. |

Off topic, OP, but I've noticed a number of regular posters here adopting my style preference of mixing ALL CAPS with lowercase titles for their threads. It's most flattering and tickles me pink that it must pizz off those few but vocal anal retentive types on this forum who constantly carp about it. |
