Anyone know anything about this place? I've been told about it, but not found anything positive or negative on the Internet.

And I should introduce myself. Hello!

GOD did you really look.!? This is LIKE it has been around Daegu for about 15 years. It is a solid school but it is the McDonalds of ESL schools. Overall LIKE will probably treat you fine. You will get you base pay, airplane ticket, insuranceetc but expect hagwon hassles probably quite a few hours, possible crummy apartments, and a good chance of teaching at more than 2 schools.

LIKE is a good hagwon to cut your teeth on the first year.

Believe me you could do worse.

Well, I did look. The problem is that "LIKE" is a common word. You type in "like school" and can't expect to get many relevant results.

Thanks for the answer.

This is through Longbridge, which isn't coming up as a very positive group of recruiters. Oh well, I can afford to keep looking.

I had the head teacher job at the one in Manchon (Daegu) for a year, typical silly stuff based on Korean culture. They are however honest they will pay you on time and you will get what they owe you at the end of the contract, and they are good about paying you overtime. If your in the Dorms in Sam Duk (near the main branch) they aren't to great, but if you get an apartment it could be good, mine wasn't bad. Warning you will most likely work Saturdays and a lot of overtime.

The samdok dorms is named that because the school owns the whole apartment building. The rooms are small but nice. It at times can have that college feel and sense of community. Repeat it is not like the Korean Uni dorms where they lock you in at 11:00 or so. No security guard to tattle on you.Plus it is really close to downtown Dageu. Most teachers at like wanted to live there.

As to the Saturdays I have heard people got deals with that. You work Saturdays you might not work Mondays. You work Saturdays you might later get a three day or four day weekend later that month.

It is not that bad. I still stay it is an okay school to start on.

The rooms are tiny, and they're far from nice. The temperature control panel is out in the hall way, and therefore one must negotiate with neighbors for the desired temperature. This means some planning ahead for showering is required, also. Many times the hot water will be turned off because someone is touching it or school staff turns it off during the day to save on utility costs. Btw, they automatically take away 150,000 korean won from your paycheck for electricity and gas charges every month, including in the summer months when gas usage is low. Since you live in a tiny dorm WITHOUT a kitchen, I don't understand their 150,000 automatic utility charge. They are pocketing some money here.

Regarding working on saturdays: Yes. And there are no special deals about getting a day off in the week, except that there typically is a three day weekend each month (but they'll tamper with that, too). The school takes advantage of national holidays and that's when you're guaranteed a three day weekend.

Like School has three branches, and each is managed differently. I know one school in particular is staffed by a much more relaxed boss and he is generally a pleasure to work with. The other schools are not , and I know teachers who have quit their contracts prematurely.

All in all, I'd say to stay away from this school, although it is not the worst one can come across. They will pay you on time, and the bosses are more or less decent people. Just the weekend work, minimum pay, and housing (and dubious utility charge) that blows.

I worked at LIKE from 2011 to 2012 and I really had no problems there at all. I was always paid on time, never treated unfairly, and never lied to. They were always generous with overtime, and even though there was some Saturday work, it was never more than a couple hours, and they always gave me a three day weekend every month. There was no weekend work during intensives.

All the directors for the different branches are all educators, not business people, so they're concerned more about the education of the students than just making money. You don't see that very often with hagwons. The directors do have high expectations and can be a little tough, but they all speak English fluently so there are no communication problems, and they're always happy to take you out to dinner or sightseeing. You're not going to like it here if you just want to party and drink all the time, but if you want experience doing quite a few different things and you want to work with high quality students, then this is the place to teach.
